Breast pain and found lump, terrified, guests due in an hour

In need of a huge handhold please. I’m 40 and have two young daughters. I had some strange pain in my right breast yesterday , and again the morning… I have now found a blueberry sized firm lump around 1 inch away from my nipple. It’s roundish and mobile but definitely “different” to the rest of the normal textures around it.

I have guests due in an hour… family friends… my daughters have been so excited they have actually been counting down the days. I feel sick but I need to get dressed and carry on. I can’t let everyone down.

my husband has a disability and we have no family help, I’m NC with my own mother die an abusive childhood. My husband would not be able to cope with the children on his own. For fucks sake why did this have to happen.

im going to put some nice clothes on, tidy up a bit and plaster on a smile for the rest of the day.

one thing I have on my side is that I have private health insurance and they have a fast track service for things like this, but alas I’ll not be able to call them till they open at 9am tomorrow.

my kids school nativity show is tomorrow too :-(

i would be extremely grateful for any virtual support anyone is able to give. Thank you in advance.

Cysts can be incredibly painful as they press on nerves near the nipple.

Good luck with your appointment.

HedgerowHelena · 09/12/2025 12:01

When you’re waiting for an appointment every ache and pain is magnified. Good luck and I’m fairly sure you will have good news 💐

I think the reason why there is confusion as to whether or not cancer is painful is because it is in the latter stages when it's much more advanced, not on the initial discovery, so it's a 50/50 toss-up.

OP's pain seems to have come on suddenly along with discovering the lumps, which tells me it's very unlikely to be cancer. But right now the uncertainty and the pain needs to be addressed asap. Her anxiety and stress must both be stratospheric right now. I know not everyone agrees, but I have been praying for the best outcome since I saw this thread yesterday.

Thank you. You are right, I’m feeling absolutely ill and very tearful. Pathetic I know. All I can think about are my little girls and their little faces. I haven’t eaten as I feel as though I’m going to throw up. Hopefully it will be as most people are saying - inflamed cysts.

You're not pathetic. Naturally and rightfully you are terrified of what this appointment may bring. Please remember you are not pathetic, not in any way, shape or form.

NotTeling · 09/12/2025 12:21

Good luck. I also found a lump recently. My appointment at the breast clinic isn’t until the 24th despite the supposed urgent two week wait I was referred under.

Bunnybear42 · 09/12/2025 12:30

Agree with PP. most painful lumps are cysts or swollen nodes/nodules
i had one in my 30s that scared the life out of me but by the time the ultrasound app came it had disappeared.. hopefully it’s similar for you. It’s so hard not to worry, (I know I have health anxiety) so many people seem to be affected by cancer nowadays. Although I think we are so much more aware due to social media etc .. great to be informed of symptoms but also drives up worry when you get anything that’s at all unusual for you. Wishing you all the best x

Not really. Mine is irregular and not very mobile according to the GP. Just tops a very shitty year off really. Anyway, this is your thread. I very much hope you have good news.

Geranium879 · 09/12/2025 12:48

Oh I’m sorry @NotTeling . This year started with me having an urgent referral for a suspected melanoma … and during the year I also got referred to oral surgery by dentist for a lump on the roof of my mouth and needed a CT scan, the results of which took weeks. Both were fine in the end. I thought I was guaranteed to sail to the end of the year without out any more health worries but here I am, boob throbbing with pain and full of anxiety. It’s truly awful.

There a few encouraging comments on here from people who have been diagnosed and have come out the other side. Do feel free to share the thread. It’s awful feeling alone.

Thinking of everyone who is waiting for an appointment, waiting for answers, waiting for treatment, in treatment or recovering.

The world is a crazy place, but there are good people everywhere. I hope people feel the love and care they deserve xx

Maddy70 · 09/12/2025 17:04

Breast cancer is usually pain free .. it's likely to be a cyst

Geranium879 · 09/12/2025 17:32

Hello everyone, I am just in a taxi on my way back to the station. I was in the breast clinic for three hours. I cried in the waiting room and I was so well looked after. The staff were so so nice. I am very relieved to say I got the all clear. I have dense breasts, with a lot of glandular tissue and virtually no fat. The lumps are just normal tissue “nodularity” that they think has become more pronounced due to “my age” and hormones, likewise the pain. The consultant kept saying he thinks I may have pulled a muscle - I really don’t think so… but they looked at the most lumpy areas really closely and the ultrasound went over the lumpy bits several times. So I have had clinical exam, mammogram and ultrasound and nothing suspicious detected at all. I went back into see the consultant at the end and he showed me everything. It was so worth going and I won’t hesitate to go back if I am ever uncertain again.

Thank you so much to everyone who took the time to comment and help me. Now I know I have dense breasts I am going to have to monitor them very closely. I hope that everyone on here waiting for appointments has a similarly positive experience. The one stop breast clinic were honestly amazing. The nursing assistants were like mothers honestly

Fab news OP! So pleased you’re ok.

Pearl97 · 09/12/2025 17:39

I’m so pleased. I’ve been checking for updates xx

HedgerowHelena · 09/12/2025 17:47

I’m so pleased for you 💐

RaininSummer · 09/12/2025 17:49

I feel your relief. Thanks for updating.

YorkshireGoldDrinker · 09/12/2025 18:05

Wonderful news! I'm so pleased for you! The relief must be immeasurable. Go and get yourself some food in you, maybe a glass of wine and an early night. Oooh! Sending hugs.

This is why private healthcare is superior. The NHS would have left you waiting for weeks.

Geranium879 · 09/12/2025 18:17

Thank you so much all. As someone with very scant real life support I cannot articulate how much the support of the last couple of days has meant to me. I hope anyone reading this in the future finds hope in the outcome I posted reassuring, but also I want people to know how fab the one stop breast clinic was.. and please please don’t hesitate to go if you have ANY unusual symptoms. I was taken very seriously. I was literally sat in the waiting room in tears and I was taken care of every step of the way. Shout out to the amazing Irish nursing assistant that made me a cup of tea and made me put some packets of biscuits in my handbag for the journey home. They were all so thorough and kind.

Yep, £45 pcm and worth every penny. I don’t spent money on much for myself , it all goes on my kids, but it’s my one decadent luxury and it’s worth its weight in gold.

I've had two lots of cancer in one breast (ductal and lobular) over 15 years. NHS was brilliant both times. Lopsided now but old lady and don't care. Sometimes wish they had evened me up so no more bras! Or even moved the other one into the middle!!

Like a Boob-Cyclops!👁

Glad you have come through it.
