What do GP receptionists ask intrusive questions?

AIBU to not expect to tell the receptionist more details? She asked me the nature of the appointment. I said it’s a gynaecological issue, she asked if I could share more information I said no, I’m not comfortable doing that. It wasn’t an emergency appointment and I asked for a female GP. Surely she didn’t need to know anything more?

My surname is very unusual, and the receptionists at our GP take calls from their desk next to an open plan waiting room. I don’t want them confirming my name and my symptoms at me for everyone to hear. It’s a polite “no I’m not comfortable doing that” from me.

I know they're told to ask but I do not wish to discuss my personal ailments with someone who is not medically trained. Now, if it's not personal in nature, ie I have Morton's Neuroma and she made me an appointment with a MSK specialist then that's great, but anything personal to do with those bits of your body which are almost always encased in underwear .....no, not their business. I very politely say that it is of a highly personal nature and I do not wish to discuss it.
