AIBU in thinking that King Charles' passing will devastate Britain?

If you remember back when Queen Elizabeth II died, how upset most British people were and how it caused some social insecurity as many British people saw her as a sense of strength and a rock due to her continuity and longevity, but with her gone, they weren't sure how Britain would fare. Hence, the large crowds of mourners and a lot of upset.

King Charles III - though not as admired as Queen Elizabeth was - also has longevity and a sense of continuity in a different way: not as monarch since he's only been in the role for three years, but as a royal figure, i.e. he has been in the spotlight since the 1940s and conducting royal duties since the 1960s. When he dies, will Britain finally feel as though the older generation of royals - who for so long have provided reassurance and comfort to the British people - have gone?

Will this lead to a lot of soul-searching about where next Britain must go and perhaps cause social tensions due to the insecurity of identity? Who will the British look to to guide the nation from then on? Who will be their new rock?

If he lives as long as his mother he'll be on the throne for another 19 years.
If he lives as long as his grandmother he'll still be here in 2049.

No need to worry about the whole fabric of society crumbing just yet.

Don't talk daft, he'll never hit ninety, let alone get to his mum's or grandmother's ages!

Charles is already elderly and has cancer. I don't think anyone would be surprised when he dies. For the majority of people the Queen was the only monarch they knew so her passing had more impact.

I hope the royal family and their hangers on are severely reduced once Kate and William take over. I think the concept of a royal family is out of step with modern life. I don't really know what they bring to the table any more.

William and Kate's fake sincerity whilst they waffle about their latest topic does nothing for me and I'm sure I'm not alone.we don't need a bunch of entitled tax scroungers telling us what we should do whilst telling us nothing that isn't obvious. Eg Addiction is terrible and kids benefit from early years education .

Yes love, we'd all like our children to benefit from an early years education like your children had!

Telling everyone to be kind to addicts. Jeez. Kill me now.

I would note that I don't find Charles a particularly insincere person. I think that is part of why he has never been high in the popularity stakes.

I'll be more upset when the dog dies than King Charles. HTH.

I wish you'd keep this shit in the "Royal Family" thread

Royal family thread is a slow motion car crash, very baby reindeer "written on my iPhone". There needs to a general Monarchy thread where people can discuss what the point of it all is without the weird rants about Megan's jam.

Crofthead · 07/12/2025 11:45

The large crowds were not because we didn’t know how Britain would fare, the large crowds were to pay respects.

Hotvimtoandwaffles · 07/12/2025 11:46

Absolutely not. I can’t think of anything off the top of my head that I’d care about less to be honest. I wish the monarchy would be abolished entirely.

NameChanger20252 · 07/12/2025 11:46

Not at all. I see him like a ‘stand in King’ until William takes over.

Laplands · 07/12/2025 11:47

I get why people hate Andrew. But why hate Charles and William. I don't even hate harry. I think he handled the situation badly, but I don't hate him.

Fiftyandme · 07/12/2025 11:47

Goodness. He’s nothing more thank a figurehead.

I agree with this. With the caveat that he is very privileged and takes advantage of that as they all do.

Whereas his son is pretty much nothing but PR. So extremely popular, but nothing much of substance behind it.

We don't know that.

Even so it seems premature to start seeking opinions on whether society will be pitted against each other when he does eventually die.

No way- have you seen him?

You can identify many medical conditions just by looking at him. He looks supremely unhealthy to me- puffy hands, puffy red face-lymphedema, bloodshot eyes, poor circulation - he looks dreadful.

The queen by contrast looked very healthy and mobile even in her 90s.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 07/12/2025 11:51

'Who will be their new rock?'

Surely it will be Paul Burrell?

Having a monarch is the very pinnacle of inequality.

I think we do. He's unwell, lives with cancer, and will not live another 20 years.

I think once the spotlight is on William and Kate, which will be fairly soon, once his aunts and father arent around, and more importantly Harry and Meghan fade into irrelevance he will come up short. It will be difficult for him to suddenly start making an effort in his 50's after avoiding doing much at all and getting away with it for so long. I think the last Monarch has already been born.

milveycrohn · 07/12/2025 11:54

I'm always saddened by the deaths of people, and especially famous people or people who have been 'there' for a while.
I am retired, and I was saddened by the late Queen's death, as she had been there throughout my life (I am retired and born in 1953 after her coronation). However, she was in her 90s, so her eventual death was not totally unexpected.
Charles has cancer, and although the population have been kept in the dark about the nature or severity of his cancer, it would appear he is still being treated. However, he is 77 years old, and therefore his eventual death would not be as sad as if he was in his 30s.
However, I am also saddened by the deaths of other famous people, such as actors Prunella Scales, or Diane Keaton. Especially when you remember them in productions from years ago, when they were young.
So Saddened, yes, Affected, NO. Life will carry on for the rest of us, and especially as Charles is generally considered a 'placeholder' monarch, anyway.
Frankly, I was much more deeply affected by the deaths of relatives from my and DH side of the family.

Balloonhearts · 07/12/2025 11:54

Queen Elizabeth dying was the end of an era. People had never known any other monarch. She was a hardworking and diligent queen and generally nice lady.

King Charles is neither hardworking, nor a good man and has been King for only 3 years. He cheated on his wife very publicly and made quite the spectacle of himself and the Royal family. His one good move was the stripping of Andrews titles.

While I'm sure his family will miss him, the British people will, largely, be unaffected by his passing.

Be careful what you wish for! You might get an idiot like Macron. Or imagine “two tier, never here, free gear” corrupt Starmer.

At least the Monarcy gives thee people of the UK a fail safe means to dissolve our Government in an emergency.

Is this written with AI?

TheMorgenmuffel · 07/12/2025 11:57

I doubt it.
I don't even think most of the population was devastated when the queen died. It just made for good telly to present it that way.

MoonWoman69 · 07/12/2025 11:57

No. I have had absolutely zero interest in the RF since Diana died.
They are all a bunch of entitled, useless, grifters with absolutely no morals at all, who have done fuck all to deserve the positions they hold.
KC will only hang on longer than he would have done because he has privilege that us mere serfs don't, immediate private health care. No waiting on lists or being denied medication for him. Oh no! He just picks up the phone (or his staff do!) and he's in.
As for Anne, nobody seems to remember her beating her dogs?
Or QEII and her revolting husband going to Canada and turning up at an orphanage unannounced, taking 10 children on a picnic unsupervised and none of those children coming back?
Charles allowing Savile to give him marriage advice, when he was married to Diana? Marriage advice from a paedophile? (Even Diana thought he was a wrong un!)
And don't tell me Charles didn't know about Savile either. People seem to forget the scandal surrounding Charles and his young valet, many years ago.
They are evil, twisted, inbred arseholes who I'd rather didn't live in my world, thank you very much!

Peachii · 07/12/2025 11:57

This post is clearly just inviting people to be unkind to Charles. It’s a reverse.
