AIBU in thinking that King Charles' passing will devastate Britain?

If you remember back when Queen Elizabeth II died, how upset most British people were and how it caused some social insecurity as many British people saw her as a sense of strength and a rock due to her continuity and longevity, but with her gone, they weren't sure how Britain would fare. Hence, the large crowds of mourners and a lot of upset.

King Charles III - though not as admired as Queen Elizabeth was - also has longevity and a sense of continuity in a different way: not as monarch since he's only been in the role for three years, but as a royal figure, i.e. he has been in the spotlight since the 1940s and conducting royal duties since the 1960s. When he dies, will Britain finally feel as though the older generation of royals - who for so long have provided reassurance and comfort to the British people - have gone?

Will this lead to a lot of soul-searching about where next Britain must go and perhaps cause social tensions due to the insecurity of identity? Who will the British look to to guide the nation from then on? Who will be their new rock?

Give over, she lived to 96, hardly a tragedy.

Death means very little, life ALWAYS gone on.

Instead consider OP, why you need a crutch such as the royal family to get through life.

I would think it was a shame, just the same as anyone I am vaguely aware of dying. But that would be it. If it wasn't for all of the TV coverage, I wouldn't give it a second thought.

I'm not sure CK3s demise is in any way imminent. I reckon he has prostate cancer and that can be treated successfully for many years. OK there are side effects to the treatment that can make a patient look grim, but overall they can survive a long time.

Ask my Uncle in Law. He is 88 now and was diagnosed when he was 74. Not a bother on him now, he gets regular hormone therapy now and in the beginning got radiation etc. I do realise that there a lot of factors that contribute to prognosis, I'm just giving one of them.

As for the ascendence of W to the throne, I am in full agreement about transparency, paying full taxes, visible wills, an asset register, and most of all a dedicated Foundation of Philanthropy. Gwan Willie, do it! I doubt many will support you if you hunker down on your estate and pop your head over the parapet only for an Aston Villa match.

It was categorically stated that it’s not prostate cancer. I have been roundly berated on here for suggesting it is!

I agree that, at 93, it was hardly a surprise, @nomas, and I wouldnt say I was devastated when QEII died, but I did feel somewhat dislocated - someone that had been a continuous presence through all of my life (a remote one, but still a bit of stability in an every changing world) was gone. My mum went with her mum and her sisters to see the Queen’s coronation procession pass through the Mall, and my mum died not long before the Queen did, so maybe that plays into how I felt.

I am sure I won’t feel the same when Charles goes.

OK, I must have missed that statement from the Palace confirming that it's not prostate cancer. Have you seen it?

Either way, I realise he is ill, but it may not be terminal. Many cancers aren't nowadays with targeted therapies and so on, even if they are advanced.

My point was not intended to offend.

I totally get that, but I think OP has over egged the pudding, however. Social insecurity is caused by inflation, lack of jobs etc, not which over privileged monarch is sitting on the throne.

However, I agree with you that it did feel like the end of an era. Sorry to hear about your mum. My mum is getting very elderly now and I will be devastated should she leave us.

Noticed the front of the Daily Telegraph today and it said that Charles could be the first Royal Billionaire. Really? How nice for him and his heir. No wonder they are keeping stuff under wraps. More gets more.

The French got rid of their monarchy a long time ago and it has saved taxpayers a lot of money.

MartinAynuss · 11/12/2025 23:01

I gave no fucks about his mother passing, I will give no fucks about Charles passing, I would give no fucks about William passing (he will probably outlast me)
I disagree with a hereditary monarchy. I give the same amount of fucks about them, as they give about me and my loved ones.

That’s certainly true as far as I’m concerned. I think of him as being King Prince Charles.

And when people refer to the Duke of Edinburgh or the Princess of Wales, I’m really flummoxed. It takes me a good 30 seconds to work out who they might mean. I’m not sure if there’s still a Princess Royal, but if there is it’s probably Princess Anne.

And they do love dressing up so much.

I too call him King Prince Charles and when I hear Princess of Wales I visualise Diana and the same for the DoE. And as for the dressing up and the medals, they sometimes look as if they have done a Scarlett O'Hara and dragged down all the curtains in their mansions and cobbled together those very odd capes and drapes all pinned together with about 30 medals apiece. Then there are the hats, those wide-brimmed affairs set off with swooping white plumage. They look truly ridiculous and I wonder what they think wnen they look in the mirror "ooh don't l look regal and magnificentl look upon me oh ye plebs and marvel"

scorpiogirly · 11/12/2025 23:26

It certainly won't devastate me. In my opinion we could have well done without a King up the butt of the WEF.

Namechangefordaughterevasion · 11/12/2025 23:56

I felt no emotion when thenQueen died and I doubt I'll feel any when Charles goes. They hold no emotional resonance for me.

You didn’t offend! It seems the most likely and logical situation to me too.

CurrentHun · 12/12/2025 01:46

It’s sad if anyone dies but Charles is a divisive figure because of Diana so he won’t be universally missed as a monarch in an environment where mourning a monarch is optional. he’s not been in the job long enough to be loved as a fixture.
I like his environmentallsm and commitment to young people with the Prince’sTrust so actually he’s got the credentials as a good King.
The Queen was missed and gained respect because she had a lifelong clean record and was a wise grandmotherly figure especially at the end of her life in an age of shitty, corrupt populists like Trump and Boris Johnson.

I think William will make a good job of it and hopefully enjoy doing it, once their kids are older.

Nat6999 · 12/12/2025 02:01

When he finally pops his clogs it should be the time when they Royal Family are made redundant, pack them off to one of their many homes & let them finance themselves completely, pay for the upkeep of their homes, pay full market rent if they live in Crown Estate properties, pay for their own transport, helicopters, flights, cars etc, pay for their own protection, it's not like they can't afford it & make them pay full inheritance tax.

Privet! Let me assure you that no one in the UK gives Charles a second thought and the only devastation his death will cause will be financial due to the millions his funeral will cost.

You don’t speak for everyone in the UK, I’m Scottish, living in my home town, and my daughter and me care very much.

lookingfornotifications · 12/12/2025 05:51

For me the Queen and Prince Charles were always just there in their roles, when I was a child. The passing of now King Charles will feel like a big shift in the landscape for me, even though I won't be devastated. Old people die and King Charles will not be a young man when he dies. I'm sure he'll be around a while yet.

It might feel a bit strange for a day or two, then the world will move on and William will take his place. For a new generation, they will hold the place the Queen and Charles held for me as the royal family, when young. My day to day life will go on the same.

OmNomShiva · 12/12/2025 06:29

I’d love it if this signalled the end of the monarchy.

If William, the baldest of the failsons, said ok, that’s it lads, game over…

It must be if the Telegraph puts it out there. Hello will prob follow up with a Kate/Wills billionaire edition. I noticed they are on the front cover of the latest edition. I won't be watching the Xmas speech.

My guess is blood cancer, like the queen. Probably early on and treatable for now, but fatal in the end

The Queen was 96 anything could have killed her at that age.

I imagine that Charles has a cancer that he will die with and not die from
That is the phrase that doctors and oncologists often use, as they did with my DH.

Charles is giving an address tonight about cancer screening for Stand Up To Cancer. And it is thought he will identify the type of cancer he has. That is a good thing and I wish Kate could have joined him to encourage regular screening.
