AIBU in thinking that King Charles' passing will devastate Britain?

If you remember back when Queen Elizabeth II died, how upset most British people were and how it caused some social insecurity as many British people saw her as a sense of strength and a rock due to her continuity and longevity, but with her gone, they weren't sure how Britain would fare. Hence, the large crowds of mourners and a lot of upset.

King Charles III - though not as admired as Queen Elizabeth was - also has longevity and a sense of continuity in a different way: not as monarch since he's only been in the role for three years, but as a royal figure, i.e. he has been in the spotlight since the 1940s and conducting royal duties since the 1960s. When he dies, will Britain finally feel as though the older generation of royals - who for so long have provided reassurance and comfort to the British people - have gone?

Will this lead to a lot of soul-searching about where next Britain must go and perhaps cause social tensions due to the insecurity of identity? Who will the British look to to guide the nation from then on? Who will be their new rock?

@LidlAmaretto
their estates aren’t just 100s of acres, they are hundreds of thousands of acres.
their landholdings is vast , Sandringham alone is 20,000 acres. I read somewhere that’s 6 miles across.
that’s plenty of land for privacy and of course we don’t know what they’re up to 95% of the time.

Nonsense, Starmer did visit Southport after the attacks.

Give me Starmer over Charles any day of the week. At least he has worked hard to get where he is rather than being lucky at being born into an extremely priveleged family.

He stayed 10 minutes, it was an insult.
Kate and William spent thecday with the emergency services that dealt with the attack ambulance etc

Boudy · 07/12/2025 21:21

😂 for op

CathyorClaire · 07/12/2025 21:21

I’d rather it is him than some washed-up politician as president.

Nothing to stop an ex- royal standing if they feel they're the best fit for the role.

Haha. Can you imagine?!

"I will end homelessness"

If he was a politician, people might expect him to actually do it

maddiemookins16mum · 07/12/2025 21:25

Goodness no way. I was saddened when The Queen died, but Charles is not someone I’m interested in.

MorrisZapp · 07/12/2025 21:27

I agree. It's like when a dear old department store that you didn't visit in years closes down. It's unsettling that something that seemed so utterly permanent withers away. I'm not a royalist at all, I hold no respect for titles. But they've always just... been there.

Supersimkin7 · 07/12/2025 21:28

Dismal infighting family.

I think the country will sigh a breath of relief. I was born late 70s and the Queen was already elderly then. Then Charlie has been through scandal after scandal and is going to die soon.

I think everyone will say "the king is dead, long live the King!" Because whatever you think about the monarchy, William and Kate are good people. William is a chip off the old block in terms of his mother. And their kids are adorable too.

I think if it was anyone else who was next in line to the throne, the monarchy would be finished. But seeing as Wills and Kare are next up, I think we will be living in a Golden Age of the Monarchy. They are young, intelligent and wise people.

I wish the well.

The Queen was 52 in 1978. Hardly ‘elderly’. Possibly only a few years older than you are now.

redboxer321 · 07/12/2025 21:30

Re all the work they do, they do just enough, or are seen to do just enough, to stop us, the public, from lopping off their heads. Survival has always been no.1 for the Windsors which is why Andrew's been hung out to dry.

justpassmethemouse · 07/12/2025 21:30

As far as rocks go, I’d rather have The Rock in charge. Or just any rock from the beach, it’d be cheaper.

Kate and William's visit (a few months after the attacks) lasted around 90 Mins I believe.
They also visited this year I think. If so great.! But not a huge chunk of time out of their far from busy lives.

Starmer visited multiple times. It's well documented. And he had a few riots to deal with at the time. Things that the Kate and William dont need to worry their pretty little heads about.

lifeonmars100 · 07/12/2025 21:35

I wonder how much Charlie Boy knew about Andrew and for how long? The sordid story broke about 6 or 7 years ago and I can't believe it was a shock to Mr Moutbatten-Windsor's nearest and dearest even then. I think they hoped that if they ignored it the media and the public would forget about it

LivingTheDreamish · 07/12/2025 21:38

I'm no ardent royalist but they fill their space in British society and we're used to it. We don't really need them but on the world stage they add gravitas to whichever lolloping idiot is currently PM.

I think we all sense Charles' reign won't be long but William and Kate seem ready and willing to step into the void, and will likely make some changes to modernize the system and create something more suitable for George in his time to take over. The money side of things definitely needs looking at, along with the number of "full time working royals" living off the State.

In short - it will be okay OP!

Haroldwilson · 07/12/2025 21:47

Boomers are getting on a bit, having William as king will underline how ludicrous the monarchy is. The further we get from empire, the more likely a republic becomes.

Weird thing to latch onto. 52 is quite elderly to a child's eye.

Dabralor · 07/12/2025 21:50

Well I for one feel quite fond of Charles. He’s relentlessly busy and has championed sustainability long before it was mainstream.
I think we will notice a real decline in the visibility of royalty - William just doesn’t seem as interested in the pomp and majesty. I don’t really care about all that but I think certain people feel really invested in all that guff.

I think the opposite, I don't think they seem ready and willing in the slightest, W wants to do royalty with a small 'r' he says. So whatever we are used to now, I think we will be seeing a hell of a lot less of a new monarch and his wife. But raking in the same many millions

State visits when they have to do it, the Cenotaph, Trooping of the Colour, and I think the rest of the time will be football matches, Wimbledon and holidaying

But he certainly doesn’t bother to champion sustainability in his private life. He owns multiple large houses and vast estates, has hundreds of servants, travels by private jets.
instead he lectures others. I call that hypocrisy.

Dabralor · 07/12/2025 21:57

On a lighter, more wistful note, there was a lovely lady in my nana’s carehome who absolutely loved ‘Princess Diane’. She was always fussing about having the telly on for ‘Diane’s wedding’ and used to wear her ‘Diane hat’ in the garden during the summer. None of us had the heart to tell her that her name wasn’t Diane and that she wasn’t ever coming to visit. Pretty sad really 😢

Motherofalittledragon · 07/12/2025 21:58

Eh? Come again?

Dabralor · 07/12/2025 22:01

Well just that, really. Let’s hope Carol is up there on a cloud somewhere in her sun hat with princess Di, who has hopefully updated her on her actual name.

nocoolnamesleft · 07/12/2025 22:06

I think far less of a fuck will be given than there was about QEII.

Calliopespa · 07/12/2025 22:09

Judellie · 07/12/2025 21:05

I don't think anyone cares tbh. Wasn't there a prediction he'd die in 2026 anyway?

That's such a ghoulish comment.

2021x · 07/12/2025 22:16

I think KC is pretty realistic. He is the first monarch to be constantly exposed to the public feeling about him. I do think he was wrongly villanised for the relationship with Diana and he has been consistent on many things since then. He has also shown backbone over Andrew which is something I thought they would brush under the carpet.

There are some issues that come with being that highly public i.e. the issues associating with pyschopaths and narcissists e.g. Jimmy Saville and others, th very public airing of family issues and the alternative health crowd but I think he has been a decent public figure for many decades considering he doesn't really have any experience of being one of the ordinary folk.
