AIBU in thinking that King Charles' passing will devastate Britain?

If you remember back when Queen Elizabeth II died, how upset most British people were and how it caused some social insecurity as many British people saw her as a sense of strength and a rock due to her continuity and longevity, but with her gone, they weren't sure how Britain would fare. Hence, the large crowds of mourners and a lot of upset.

King Charles III - though not as admired as Queen Elizabeth was - also has longevity and a sense of continuity in a different way: not as monarch since he's only been in the role for three years, but as a royal figure, i.e. he has been in the spotlight since the 1940s and conducting royal duties since the 1960s. When he dies, will Britain finally feel as though the older generation of royals - who for so long have provided reassurance and comfort to the British people - have gone?

Will this lead to a lot of soul-searching about where next Britain must go and perhaps cause social tensions due to the insecurity of identity? Who will the British look to to guide the nation from then on? Who will be their new rock?

It’s a shame when anyone dies, for their family. Devastated because someone I don’t know and who has nothing to do with my life dies? No. Why would I be?
It’s the monarchy. They’ll be another one along soon 🤷‍♀️

Be careful what you wish for! You might get an idiot like Macron. Or imagine “two tier, never here, free gear” corrupt Starmer.

At least the Monarcy gives thee people of the UK a fail safe means to dissolve our Government in an emergency.

And that worked well when Boris Johnson illegally prorogued Parliament.
at least with a an elected head of state we can vote them out at the end of their term. With this load of parasites we’re stuck with whoever happens to be the next in line no matter how corrupt they are.

I would have more respect for him if he had had a more modest coronation, but no, apparently he spent £72, 000,000 on being daubed with a bit of oil by an Archbishop and repeating a few vows. I think for all his talk about climate control, conserving the worlds resources, cutting back on the royals and the false modesty about wearing out his old clothes he loves a bit of pomp and bling and is very happy to splurge our money on a knees up and a fancy costume.

Yikes: £72M ??? (not keen on an expensive funeral & another coronation in a few years, although I suppose QEII had longevity at least)

Yes! The one time when we could have done with the Queen asserting her authority. But she was not able to do so… for fear of being seen to assert her authority!

I understand all of the constitutional reasons why but oh my goodness … the entire debacle demonstrated the need for serious reform …

We are long past the point when we can rely on the good faith of those in power which is necessary to make an unwritten constitution function well.

Government and monarchy need to be subject to far more concrete public scrutiny.

SnoopyPajamas · 07/12/2025 14:02

Are you American?

What an obviously insincere, manufactured question.

Agree

MsFogi · 07/12/2025 14:04

Wtf are you smoking OP? 99.9% of the population will not give a damn - but will take a bank holiday of it is on offer.
it is high time to get rid of the monarchy and to claw back the land etc from the bunch of grifters.

I agree that any overhaul of the monarchy also should be accompanied by looking at our political system.
You cant just snip parts off a rooster and leave the mangy body running around.

Beserkering · 07/12/2025 14:05

For a minute I thought this was going to be about Charles I, and OP was just a bit late posting about it.

Shouldbedoing · 07/12/2025 14:07

It used to be treason to speak of the death of the monarch.

Just saying.
Speculation is in poor taste though. He's a man with a family at the end of the day.

Laserwho · 07/12/2025 14:10

The passing of my own family and friends devastate me. I was upset when the queen died but not devasted. The same when Charles dies. It will not influence my life apart from being very briefly sad. Their existence dosn't affect me.

I think most people won’t really give a shit

LakieLady · 07/12/2025 14:31

My MIL will be a bit upset. She loves the RF and once told me that the QE2 was her role model.

That's clearly why MIL's lived in a council house in the arse end of Croydon for 65 years, has only worked for about 8 years out of her 87, and struggled to bring up 4 kids because her husband was a foul-tempered, controlling, financially abusive arsehole.

Despite all evidence to the contrary, she persists in believing that they are the "glue" that keeps the country together and we'd have nothing to keep society functioning if we became a republic.

Despite her sycophantic love of the Windsors, she's no great fan of kingy, so I doubt if she'll be particularly upset. If a die-hard monarchist like her takes his death in her stride, I can't imagine it will "devastate" the country.

Yes, and added to the £162,000,000 the late Queens lying in state and funeral came in at , changing monarchs is a pretty expensive time for the taxpayer.

redboxer321 · 07/12/2025 14:35

MIL's lived in a council house

She's got that in common with the 'Windsors' then.

But that’s not a new role. It’s an archaic title but was the lead executive managing the Duchy. It’s still the official title even if it’s shortened to ceo. The previous post holder has moved over to the Duchy of Lancaster as ceo

KaleidoscopeSmile · 07/12/2025 11:38

I wish you'd keep this shit in the "Royal Family" thread

Why?

If it is in the Royal Family board it is taken over by Royalists and harry and meghan haters. You aren't allowed to say anything against the sainted kate and william without being rounded on by regulars of the royal board

At least here you get a broad range of opinions.

Moonlightfrog · 07/12/2025 14:44

I wouldn’t give a sh#t TBH, I think it’s time to get rid of the monarchy altogether.

Charles looked unwell when he took the crown, it won’t be a huge shock or loss when he dies, obviously it will be sad for his family, the same as it would of anyone dies but it won’t be a ‘huge loss’ to the country.

Attictroll · 07/12/2025 14:46

I don’t know one person who cares about him or sees him as a rock. My mum in her 70s was quite upset about the queen dying but she was the only person I knew - mil in her 80’s was unbothered. Also I work for the London office of an American firm and there was a whole weird moment when us colleagues kept on saying how sorry they were for our loss 😂 as a london team we had a chat a chat about not revealing how many of really felt in case they said we didn’t need the holiday that was on offer for her funeral. So a big no and curious you think anyone cares many saw him come to the throne and because he is so old expect him to die after a short reign anyway. I kind of hope he will be the last monarch.

jumpingthehighjump · 07/12/2025 14:50

That didn't work too well last time did it? When Johnson illegally prorogued parliament?

Bluebellysmell · 07/12/2025 14:50

Then we will end up with workshy William

I'd like to get rid of the lot of them

madaboutpurple · 07/12/2025 15:28

Years ago a friend of mine got a badge made, it said In an emergency please don't get a politician or a Royal to visit me. I don't think Charles dying will impact many people really.

jumpingthehighjump · 07/12/2025 15:33

In answer to the OP, absolutely not. I do not care the slightest bit. We all know that QE2 and Charles have probably had the best medical attention in the world. All that will follow is hundreds of millions spent on a funeral and a coronation.

I think we might miss Charles because at least he does a bit of work. William and Kate are setting out their plans for the future slowly slowly drip drip... more money for less work, four times a year sugary footage of us and the kids in our 150 acre Forest lodge private garden, just to let you know we're still around even if you don't see us working day in day out
