Acne /pollution

Sorry posting in aibu, but my 20yr old son suffered from cystic acne as teenager, and was still getting odd spots but overall clear, hes been in london for 3 years now, and all of a sudden hes having really bad breakouts, mainly cheeks, and i got him norse organics, which has made his skin worse!
Its starting to get to him now, he is on lymecycline from gp for last few years, but nothing is helping, I've seen adverts for serum 47, he has oily skin has anybody tried this? And has it worked or made skin worse? I dont want to try something again which could make skin go worse like norse organics did.

Also think pollution in london has made it worse.

If I were him I'd see a dermatologist and get roaccutane. Cystic acne is not going to shift with anything topical.

Fedup0707 · 06/12/2025 20:35

Can gp prescribe that, or has to be through dermatologist? I rang gp they booked him in for appointment after new years, but was thinking what can I try in meantime, his skin had cleared up from 16 to 20 apart from odd spots which were cystic but not like it is at the moment, but now, in think with combination of the norse organics and polloution, has just gone so bad.

Has anybody tried serum 47?

Topical creams might help a little but won’t cure the problem which is coming from inside the pores.

You will waste money on lotions and potions that could be better spent on seeing a dermatologist privately.

Hankunamatata · 06/12/2025 20:47

Is it cystic acne again?

Hankunamatata · 06/12/2025 20:49

Testerone peaks around 20 in men. He may be experiencing a surge thats causing acne

Hankunamatata · 06/12/2025 20:53

My favs skincare wise are la roche posay
Cerave has good online reviews

Sillysoggyspaniel · 06/12/2025 21:08

GP can refer to a dermatologist who can prescribe it. But I would pay to see one privately and just get it done rather than waiting months.

Fedup0707 · 06/12/2025 21:50

Not quite cystic, this time but a mix of whiteheads on cheek and puss filled spots, and redness, mainly on cheeks, and one deep cystic spot on forehead. He has been on lymecycline for a few years. Tried adaplaene too.

A few years?! Then it's not working!! If it's not worked in a few months then it's not going to.

I’ve had Zineryt lotion prescribed by my GP when I had acne in my 20’s, it cleared by skin up really well. (Mine was hormonal acne due to the pill though).

If your son has tried a lot of things it may be worth him enquiring about roaccutane. I think the side effects can be quite nasty though.

Fedup0707 · 06/12/2025 22:22

Lymecycline did work initially his cystic acne got a lot better and, he would get the odd whiteheads, but now its gone really bad again.

Would zineryt work on oily male skin? Could be hormonal testosterone surge as @Hankunamatata suggested? Didn't think of that if it is that what could help?

Unfortunately, a lot of treatments are trial and error.

Your son would be better off speaking to his GP and/or a dermatologist.

RedHotMess · 06/12/2025 23:20

I firmly believe that acne is systemic and that topical remedies are as good as useless. Enquire about Roaccutane - it’s the only thing that really works.

Namechange234567 · 06/12/2025 23:23

Sorry I know it's not quite your question, but at 20 he needs to be booking his own GP appointments.

Fedup0707 · 06/12/2025 23:52

He is in uni in london, and we live in wales, does anyone know a private dermatologist either in london or south wales? Seriously thinking of going private to get roccatune of i possibly can for him.

Fedup0707 · 07/12/2025 10:34

I've googled and have emailed the spire in Cardiff, hopefully they get back to me tomorrow, hopefully be able to get him roccatune!
