To not apply for jobs where the employer hasn’t even bothered to proofread the advert?

I came across a role that seemed promising at first glance - decent pay, interesting sector, but then noticed the job ad still had placeholder text like “{x} days at {xx:xx} BST.”
It’s clearly been copied from a template and no one’s checked it.

It just put me off. If they’re that careless with their recruitment materials, what’s it like to work there?

AIBU to take this as a red flag and not bother applying?

So don’t then. 🤷🏻‍♀️

myglowupera · 06/12/2025 18:48

Yanbu. I’d be put off too.

I get this. There’s a school local to me, that every time they post a job ad, the info pack says they have 1200 pupils on role, instead of on roll. Drives me insane. Wouldn’t work there. 😂

gogomomo2 · 06/12/2025 19:08

Your choice but I can tell you from experience, putting the ad up isn’t something we take much time over because it’s super hectic and both myself and my boss are dyslexic and neither of us can proofread anything, honestly not our best skills but if I was hiring you and you mentioned it and you could bring excellent proofreading skills to the set up here i would count it as a big plus point!

By all means take that approach. But it does feel somewhat 'cutting off your nose to spite your face' if it is otherwise a well paying interesting job.

People make mistakes. And it's unlikely the person you will actually be working for/with was responsible for posting the actual ad.

This.

Smartiepants79 · 06/12/2025 21:47

How much do you need a job?? If you can afford to be really choosy then don’t apply. If the job was interesting and well paid then I’d be giving it a go regardless. High possibility you wouldn’t get it anyway.

KissMyArt · 06/12/2025 21:49

No skin off anyone's nose but yours 🤷‍♂️

faffadoodledo · 07/12/2025 07:15

My son didn’t apply for English at Birmingham university because of a misplaced apostrophe on a sign on a door in that department. I felt he was completely reasonable. But there again, I’m a grammar pedant too!

RoaRiRi · 07/12/2025 07:22

I don’t think I’d like to work with someone who was so bothered by this, it would put them off applying for a job. Sorry!

PollyBell · 07/12/2025 07:32

Well i realise I am not perfect and humans make mistakes, I dont need to prove anything to myself or others

agree

many job adverts have some sort of error
it is often rushed through due to staffing issues!

graceinspace999 · 07/12/2025 07:35

Just think how quickly you’d rise to the top.

NotForTheMoneyandNotForTheApplause · 07/12/2025 07:56

Last time I checked anyone can apply any criteria to choose which jobs to go for, why would proof reading skills not be one of them?
