Tiny burn blister on toddlers finger - to not go to A&E

PantaloonMad · 06/12/2025 09:24

My wonderful parents were looking after my son yesterday and unfortunately he managed to touch the lightbulb on a lamp there and got a tiny burn on the tip of his index finger. They ran it under cool water and called 111 who said just keep it clean/keep an eye on it.

Son seems absolutely fine and happy today, there is a little round blister but the finger doesn’t feel hot/red and it doesn’t seem to be bothering him.

My mum is freaking out over messages, saying she feels so bad and sending me screenshots from google saying if there’s a blister it needs medical attention.

I dont really want to drag my son down to A&E right now and ruin our Saturday, he will hate being cooped up in a waiting room, and I can’t imagine they will do much?!

AIBU not to take him in?
does anyone have anecdotal advice on how to treat a tiny burn? I’ve read aloe Vera can help but maybe I should just leave it alone for now?

You're doing the right thing. A small blister is absolutely not an emergency but if it looks infected at any point I'd call 111. I'd probably leave alone and wouldn't put anything on it

It’s people like your mother that clog up A&E for things that the majority would self-treat.

mindutopia · 06/12/2025 09:31

I definitely wouldn’t go to A&E for that.

APatternGrammar · 06/12/2025 09:32

You could see a pharmacist if it will make her feel better

KaySam · 06/12/2025 09:32

To probably put her mind at ease I’d go chemist for some advice , a&e is not the place I agree with you

Oneearringlost · 06/12/2025 09:33

No, it doesn't need A&E right now, a close eye, if it gets infected, think again, ( but still might not need emergency care).
Your poor mother, she probably feels horribly responsible, but she's over-reacting.
Reasure her.

Notmyreality · 06/12/2025 09:34

It’s fine just leave it to heal.

BlueMum16 · 06/12/2025 09:35

It's neither and accident or emergency that needs treatment from a hospital.

Keep it clean and dry.

If you're unsure at all pop into the chemist and get some over the counter cream

Iloveeverycat · 06/12/2025 09:35

Go to a chemist

Bryonyberries · 06/12/2025 09:36

It won’t need A&E if it is tiny. Don’t pop the blister but if it does pop keep a close eye and if it looks like it’s getting red or infected go to a GP or even a pharmacy for advice.

Coffeeishot · 06/12/2025 09:37

She's probably just feeling uber guilty and its coming out as over anxious, tell her you will take him to the gp on Monday if it isn't any better but it is fine at the moment.

CurlsLDN · 06/12/2025 09:37

I expect she feels horribly guilty and her worries are taking over.

I think you’re making the right call - but my first aid course said don’t put anything on a burn, unless it’s given by a dr/pharmacist, so no aloe

Sirzy · 06/12/2025 09:52

I agree with others go down the pharmacy and let them look and advise. Don’t put anything on it without medical advice

RabbitsEatPancakes · 06/12/2025 09:55

I'd shove some savlon or germalene on it. Should leave it open but with o toddler, might want a plaster when awake if he's catching it on stuff

SalmonOnFinnCrisp · 06/12/2025 09:58

A&E is horrendous with small children.

Unless I suspected infection and couldnt access walk in or emergency app with a GP no way wpuld I go.

A&E would literally be my last port of call

Your mum is probably upset and feeling guilty

Needspaceforlego · 06/12/2025 10:01

Go to pharmist.

I burnt my arm on the oven a few weeks back.
I used a burn plaster on it. I was frightened the blister would burst leaving infection risk.
The plasters have a gel like pad on them.
I'd get the same for a toddler.

Sunshineclouds11 · 06/12/2025 10:02

I agree she's feeling very guilty and probably wants a professional to say he's ok.

A trip to pharmacy will be fine to ease everyone's mind.

TheBeaTgoeson1 · 06/12/2025 10:03

I’m embarrassed for her.

PantaloonMad · 06/12/2025 10:09

Could you set her mind at rest by taking him to a pharmacy? She must be feeling terrible. Much worse than he does!

CurlewKate · 06/12/2025 10:16

Sorry-didn’t check before I said what nearly everyone else said!

Yes I think so to an extent! Bless her. Think she does just feel really bad, but these things happen! I’m sure my son will now know not to do it again 😊
