Feeling left out

Every week at school, during break, there is coffee and cake for staff. All staff are invited, but because of my job, I have to be available for students. In 20 years I have never gone. And no one has ever suggested covering for me, so I can go. Today I sat there and thought what a shitshow. AIBU to feel this, or should I just carry on and push it to one side?

What is your job that’s different from all those who attend?

Graciously · 05/12/2025 19:35

Ask your line manager about getting cover?

firstofallimadelight · 05/12/2025 19:39

I’d imagine everyone is just use to the situation. You should ask if occasionally you could go. Is there no one to cover your job?

Gloriia · 05/12/2025 19:43

If you have to be available for students at break time obviously you can't go for coffee and cake. Just have some later on your break.

School nurse, so I need to be available.

They don’t leave any. And I have to take my lunch before students lunch. I go at 11.50, so can’t buy from the canteen

Ask your line manager about getting cover?

I have asked her if she could cover me now and then. But she has never actually done it.

Can you ask someone to bring you back something? Maybe they would then realise you always miss out.

I get on with everyone. I just think they don’t want to cover the medical room as it’s frightening. No manager is first aid trained, which is deliberate on their part.

Is anyone else a medic who can cover
who could deal with anaphylactic issues? Etc

I think it’s more the fact that everyone else gets together. Would be nice to have some interaction. I am the only faculty with one person.

I'm really surprised they have a medical room and school nurse nowadays.
Why is the medical room frightening, it's a school not A&E.
I think if they need kids supervising in break times then there isn't anything you can do just take your own snacks in.

I have a few first aiders, but they all have full time jobs in the school. No one wants to be a First Aider because it’s scary …..lots of pupils with medical needs. We have to meet the needs of any pupil with medical needs, but there is no extra funding. I am now seeing 50-60 pupils a day. We are paid support staff wages, so there is no longer any real appeal to being the medical person in a school!

Is there another nurse to cover for you?

My mate has worked in a school for 5 years. And every year they all organise a Christmas worls do and never invite her. 🤯

Checknotmymate · 05/12/2025 22:45

I'd be requesting a nurse cake budget and then post pics on the school social media of me with a face covered in cake and a manic stare.

Bloody great idea. Today, I was a miserable bitch and was plotting my revenge….

After 20 years, have they just assumed that you don't want to go?

Shit as it is, I'm not really sure what else can be done if you are the only medical trained person and need to be there for students.

I’d go to the head.

What happens when you are off sick ?

That has not happened very often, but the first aiders do an hour each, on a rota. Then they say they are quitting when their first aid certificate expires. They are all fabulous, but get put on a one day course and then suddenly expected to know what they are doing. They are nervous wrecks basically.
