Christmas cards to whole class

DS wants to send Christmas cards to his class. I know there are children of different faiths - is it offensive to send to the whole class assuming there will be children who do not celebrate Christmas? Feels mean to leave some children out but also don't want to offend. Don't want to get flamed for the question but would genuinely like advice.

DS’ friend in class is a Muslim and sent Christmas cards last year. Only realised he was Muslim when O spoke to his mum in the summer and she mentioned them celebrating Eid.

Send them!

In the 80's I taught in a school in the West Midlands which was about 75% Sikh. I remember being a bit surprised that we did both a carol service and a nativity play! On the other hand, in the 2010's I taught in a school in Switzerland. We had quite a militant non Christian family who objected to us having a Christmas tree in school. That year it became a "peace tree" covered in dove ornaments. That lasted 1 year as the backlash from the rest of the school community demanding the reinstatement of our school Christmas tree won out and we were back to having a Christmas tree. We didn't feel too guilty as the original tradition of trees was both pagan and from that area.

Our primary school banned this on eco grounds. Writing 30 cards x 30 children is just NUTS. Never mind the expense of buying the cards in the first place.

School encouraged children who wanted to write a card to write a "class card" to all their classmates which would be displayed in the classroom. A LOT more sensible. Probably too late for this year but would definitely suggest it for next year.

Our school encourage it - good writing practice!

What a miserable school! Environmental reasons, such rubbish 🤣 When DD was in primary school we used to do class cards for all 28 children, including a candy cane or chocolate in each. All gratefully received and many other parents took part too. I did this as a struggling single mum - the cost was negligible so I don’t agree with that either.

3 kids in Primary school, 90 cards going back and forward, all to be binned in the first days of the new year.

What a waste.

For reception kids, it is a great motivator for some writing practice. Start early, though (but don't take them in until they're all done). We did three a day - and she started with the kids with the shortest names.

You can’t control if someone gets offended 🤷‍♀️ Feel free to send in a card you deem to be appropriate. If any parents don’t want to display it in their home, they can throw it away.

Give to the whole class, completely fine
especially if the cards are cute animals,
snowmen etc rather than full on nativity scene.
I have yet to meet a non Christian person who would get offended by a Christmas card, in fact have given and received cards from Muslim/hindu colleagues and most of them celebrate Christmas in some way too.

Don’t bin them- cut out the pictures and they are your gift tags for presents the following year!

How would you feel if your child came home with something Eid or Diwali related? Would you be offended or would you think it's nice that someone was sharing their culture and celebration with them?

TheCurious0range · 06/12/2025 07:41

I think it's fine, there are children of other faiths in DS' class and all are happy to receive Christmas cards, ds was thrilled to get a card at Diwali from a classmate even though it's not our faith he was very interested to hear about hers

Strange to take away a reason to write! The kids love sending/receiving cards.
