Bar stools should be banned.

Am I right?

The most uncomfortable and impractical piece of furniture ever

Slip sliding off them when they're varnished.

Legs dangling if there's no foot rest.

Knees banging into the table if it's not designed for bar stools, barrels I'm looking at you.

Wobbly, nearly always at risk of toppling over.

No where to hang your coat and bag.

Are there any redeeming features?

They're supposed to be good for being at the same height sitting or standing.

But I agree with you yes, deeply uncomfortable

Beserkering · 05/12/2025 15:53

If there’s a bar fight they’re easy to pick up and the lack of backrest combined with being relatively lightweight make them easy to swing around your head to get some momentum.

I’m 4' 10" so barstools involve mountaineering gear! 😂

Yes this. In a busy pub, you're at the same height sitting as companions who are standing.

Also, usually join the areas they're found, if the stools weren't there it would be standing room only, so better than nothing.

Ok, I like this feature.

I’m 5’1” and they’re a pain.

I’ll make one exception. There’s a pub we occasionally go to where a few times we’ve seen some blokes one of whom has a fluffy little white dog who sits up on a bar stool beautifully.

LividArse · 05/12/2025 16:08

Bar stools are a tool of patriarchy.

weebarra · 05/12/2025 16:10

Also under 5ft and they are impossible to negotiate without looking like a small child at soft play!

50Balesofgrey · 05/12/2025 16:10

This is one I made when I retired DHorse

SilverPink · 05/12/2025 16:11

Yes. Who wants to spend all night trying to remember that you shouldn’t lean back.

ElfAndSafetyBored · 05/12/2025 16:12

I like a bar stool - until I sit on it. YANBU.

Yes, and racist too.

MintTwirl · 05/12/2025 16:20

I hate them. I’m 5ft and they are too high to easily clamber up and my backside does not enjoy sitting on them either. I’d back the ban.

singmoon · 05/12/2025 16:21

They are fine if they have a backrest

As a little fatty with short legs and a penchant for wearing high heels I fully concur. It’s bad enough hoisting your bum into a central position on top of something with the diameter of a crumpet but there is absolutely no glamour in making that little plop noise when you get off them and return to terra firma.

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 05/12/2025 16:25

Too short to use at all. I am now at an age where I refuse to even attempt clambering up. Horrid uncomfortable things.

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 05/12/2025 16:25

If you're at a barstool actually at the bar, there's generally a hook under the bar in front of them you can hang your coat on.

Quite often they're there on the high tables you get barstools on as well

NeverDropYourMooncup · 05/12/2025 16:26

singmoon · 05/12/2025 16:21

And there isn't some knob standing at the bar with his coat, his girlfriend's coat and her handbag on the stool whilst she's standing chatting with her mates in front of the entire pub collection of stools supporting their property.

I assume there is meant to be an image attached - unfortunately it seems mn isn’t up/downloading them at the moment probably because of a CloudFlare issue.

RedTagAlan · 05/12/2025 16:32

Does all this apply to breakfast bar stools too ? Or are we just talking pubs ?

Monty34 · 05/12/2025 16:34

I loathe them all. Backs are better; just.
I much prefer a proper table and a chair to sit on. Preferably not an inch from the next table too.

GasPanic · 05/12/2025 16:36

They are a good test of whether you are too drunk to be served.

If you are, you will likely topple off, knocking yourself unconscious. Then you can be dragged out onto the pavement by the barstaff with little hassle.

Or at least this is how it was in the good old days.
