To be sick of fucking fibroids?

I'm bleeding post menopause. Again. So I guess I'm going to have to go back to the GP, but I'm 100% sure it's the fucking fibroids.

I've been to the GP about this recently. I was initially referred for an ultrasound and then a hysteroscopy with a biopsy. All normal, thankfully but not the nicest of experiences.

I was told after the hysteroscopy that it was fibroids causing the problems, and that they didn't need treating but a hysterectomy would be an option if they continued to bother me.

So now it's happening again - crampy pains and bleeding. Not worse than a fairly heavy period, really. I would rather put up with it than have to have the op...I hate hospitals!

But what I hadn't really thought through is that I can't just actually just put up with it because the advice is to go back to the GP after every incident of post menopausal bleeding. And the GP will presumably have to refer me for more tests, as per the protocol. Which would be a massive waste of NHS resources if I had to keep going through the same thing every time.

Is a hysterectomy the only solution? (Apart from the other option of ignoring it and taking the risk that it could be something else that would then get missed)?

I'm really not good with medical stuff. Quite phobic and my natural inclination is to avoid. I WBU not to get it checked out, wouldn't I?

I've just been through the exact same thing. Had fibroids for more than 12 years for which I've had 3 lots of surgery but they grew back everytime causing years of heavy periods, mid cycle bleeding & spotting. Was still having regular periods until earlier this year (despite being late 50s) but just when I thought they were stopping have been spotting since July. GP concerned, especially as my blood tests suggested post menopause, so referred me on 2ww. Ultrasound hysteroscopy, biopsy all clear but spotting continues. They didn't really give me a eason for the spotting but suggested verbally it could be the fibroids pressing on the lining but didn't write that in the report.I've just been back to GP to ask about HRT as suffering menopause symptoms but reluctant as she said the oestrogen may make the fibroids grow or make the bleeding worse so has referred back to gynae for further advice so I wait in limbo. Wish to god I'd had a hysterectomy years ago as this is shit. Solidarity.

Look into fibroid embolisation. It worked for me. Much shorter recovery time.

FuckingFibroids · 05/12/2025 00:15

Sorry to hear that you've been going through similar @hildaogden99. Interestingly, they didn't mention the fibroids in the letter from the hospital either, only verbally when I was there.

@AnotherForumUser, I haven't heard of fibroid embolisation, thank you. Off to Google now.

Also came to say ‘embolisation’.

Not every case is suitable for it but it can be exactly what works. And no general anaesthetic. Ask your GP. Then ask again until you get a proper answer.

My sister has been prescribed progesterone which worked well and stopped her bleeding.

Please get checked out,you don't actually know it's the fibroids and all bleeding post menopause needs checking.

I’ve also been though this and I feel your pain! I’ve had fibroids for many years. First spotted when I was pregnant with DS 20 years ago.
They started bleeding continuously 2 years ago for weeks on end, at which point they put me on the fast track cancer pathway. I didn’t have cancer but I had 3 large fibroids, one of which was bleeding.
I’ve had 4 Hysteroscopy’s, including one under a general and they’ve only been able to remove the worst offender this year. Now it’s gone it’s totally resolved. They said I might need a hysterectomy too but thankfully I avoided that.
Can you not ask for fibroid resection?
Whilst waiting for each operation I was prescribed tranexamic acid to stop the bleeding which also helps.

I do wonder if they don't mention fibroids so they don't have to treat them? All my treatment (3 hysteroscopies with resection) was done privately but they kept growing back. Now that the periods appear to be going I'm still left with the spotting and am sorely tempted to go private again and have a hysterectomy so I can get HRT without the worry of it affecting the fibroids?

Similar story, 3 hysteroscopies over 12 years, fibroids resected but still grew back but now I'm apparently post meno they have shrunk a bit but still there and causing spotting. It's so scary to be put on the cancer pathway. Just been on it, all clear so now they've discharged me but I'm still having issues but not cancer so low priority.

hildaogden99 · 05/12/2025 11:02

Also @FuckingFibroids how recently was your hysteroscopy/biopsy? If recent very unlikely to be anything else (my bleeding comes & goes). Mine was only 6 weeks ago but GP still seems worried as they didn't give reason in report for bleeding (but said fibroids verbally) so she's contacted them again. If I have to go through all that again so soon I will scream!

FuckingFibroids · 05/12/2025 11:13

Hysteroscopy was at the end of May. So probably long enough for them to want to investigate again.

I did have a tiny bit of spotting very soon after that, which I'll be honest, I ignored. But this is full on bleeding of horror film proportions so I'm going to need to see the doctor. Currently awaiting a call back.

In that case, I would go back and push for a hysterectomy rather than put up with heavy bleeding and repeat investigations. Mine is only light spotting (but have suffered heavy bleeds in the past).
