Not comfortable working in these conditions

Hello,
I am a regular user but have NC for this post.

Basically my work shut unexpectedly last week due to a bacteria found in the water.
It stayed closed for a handful of days.
Having seen what the building is like, I don't want to go back to work for the time being so AIBU

They say the bacteria is limited to one area of water supply, but why are some of the taps being fitted with filters?
Of the taps they can't put a filter on, they have just closed off - surely making matters worse when it has to get turned back on?
Disabled toilets and baby changing areas, closed
No running hot water
Water stations all turned off

I'm not sure what to do, I have no guidance from my manager. I also manage a small team who don't want to work at the moment

Legionella?

SconehengeRevenge · 04/12/2025 22:01

Take a prefilled water bottle and thermos of tea/coffee 🤷‍♀️

Sounds like they've found legionella. As long as you have access to hot water etc then it's deemed ok for people to be working there. If in doubt speak to your line manager

I would contact Environmental Health and ask what the guidelines about working conditions are and returning to work if it is legionella. I remember some of the schools in my area had to delay opening after COVID lockdowns because legionella was found and they had to make sure everything was flushed out and safe to return.
A close family member had legionnaires disease 4 years ago and it’s a rare but really nasty infection.

Isn't it better that they are adding extra filters? It sounds like they have sorted the problem if they have reopened, and they're doing what they can to prevent recurrence.

Just as another thought if you have no hot water I think that contravenes health and safety at work law. I think employers have a legal obligation to provide toilet facilities with hot and cold running water, soap and a means to dry hands. If you don’t have access to hot water they are in breach of the law.

Your employer is breaching H&S guidelines with not having hot water. As an employer of 120 staff we’d be having this sorted before staff were back on site.
