Labour and democracy

AIBU to be worried about the direction this Labour Government is heading?

In the last few weeks we have had;

Labour wanting to end right to trial by jury after 800 years for certain crimes.
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2025/11/25/jury-trials-scrapped-most-crimes-lammy-murder-rape-backlog/

Postponing of four Mayoral elections for two years.

Not to mention Rachel Reeves disastrous budget and implications in the media that she may have misled the public about the £22 billion black hole.

This does not look like a Government that cares for or represents the interests of the British people.

And before anyone starts, I thought the previous Government were an abomination, but they're not the ones in power now with a huge majority making these decisions.

YANBU - These events are worrying.
YABU - Nothing to see here.

Labour accused of 'scandalous attempt to subvert democracy'

Reform UK claims it is a "blatant attempt to stop big wins" for the party, with the elections due to take place in May now set to be postponed by two years.

A bus is delayed by half an hour, a n election delayed by two years is pushing dangerously close to cancelled!

How easy some are to dupe.

I think that the removal of jury trials is inevitable for some crimes, regardless of who is in power, and in some ways regardless of whether it's the best option. There are lots of demands on the exchequer, and people clearly object to paying more tax (although our tax to GDP ratio remains below that of Germany or France). So the court system has to be operated more cheaply in order to cut the huge backlog.

The Mayoral elections are being delayed because the re-organisation of the councils in those areas is incomplete. It is politically convenient for Labour, but then it's politically convenient for Reform to make a fuss. That's just the nature of politics.

You don't like the budget. That doesn't make it undemocratic. Probably like most of us, you want someone else to pay the tax and for the services you think you'll use to be maintained, and for anything else to be cut like crazy. That's the nature of human beings.

So I dont think the sky has fallen in just yet, sorry OP.

I agree with removing trial by juries. I’ve been on a few juries and had been called for jury service a number of times. It seems like such a poor administrative mess to get those jury members to the court. If your child has been stabbed or you have been sexually assaulted do you really think it’s acceptable to be told that you’re going to have to wait 5 years? Because it’s not.

Totally agree. Good to speed up the system and avoid wasting time - I’ve been called three times and it was a total waste of time because the accused just didn’t turn up so it was postponed.

Anyone who remembers the last Labour Government could have told you how it would go

All parties are a shambles
