Is it normal to be embarrassing when sedated?

Is it normal to behave strangely or embarrassingly after being sedated??

about 6 months ago I had a procedure done in a&e which involved having to get sedated, I think I was given ketamine? I remember feeling REALLY drunk, sort of like I was falling back into a hole but I was aware of everything around me? It was actually terrifying and I vaguely remember bits where I was talking but I felt like I had no control over what I was saying😩 I remember sort of wailing out that ‘I want Chris!’ and to call Chris and I wanted Chris to be there, the nurses were lovely and were trying to reassure me and one of them was like ‘is Chris your boyfriend?’ Then I burst into tears and was like ‘no he’s my situationship 😭’ i sort of remember everyone laughing a bit after that then I don’t remember much else haha

just recently I had to go back to a&e and it was the same nurse and she recognised me and she was SO lovely, she was laughing and saying how are things with Chris?! Are you guys still a situationship or are you official now?! 😭😭

Christ knows what else I said when I was under but apparently I gave her ALL the details about how I can’t tell if wants us to be together or if he’s stringing me along and he’s messing me around and we’re on then off then on then off😭 she said I was babbling about it for about 30 mins and telling her everything ah

to be fair everything I told her was true (and Chris and I are absolutely not a thing anymore haha) but it got me wondering what else I said and in case I said anything else embarrassing 😭 Is this normal?! It was my first time getting ketamine and I never want it again bloody hell it was terrifying😩

I sang Strawberry Fields all the way back to the ward, I have a voice like a drain 🤦🏼‍♀️

🤣🤣🤣

I was sedated and sat there slagging off my mother's acting in the return to Oz. My mother did not find it funny at all and we haven't mentioned it since.

I had my gall bladder taken out years ago- the only time I’ve ever been under sedation. Before the operation I’d been in awful pain in a different hospital and everyone kept telling me to hang on because as soon as I was transferred I’d be given morphine and how wonderful it would be. I was then very disappointed to get to the second hospital, be given morphine just to promptly throw it up everywhere 😭

Coming out out sedation I felt so blissfully relaxed- I didn’t want to wake up. It felt like the best sleep of my life, all enveloped in a big pile of cotton candy (or maybe cotton wool). I could hear the nurse telling me it was time to wake up and saying, “no, I don’t want to.” It took quite a bit of persuasion for me to leave that marvellous sleep. Still fantasise about it sometimes.

My colleague came into work on her way home to hand in her sick note, her DH was driving her and it could have waited but she didn’t want to. Anyway, boss asked her how it went, carpel tunnel type surgery, she showed him her hand and said it would be great for giving wanks 😂😂😂. We have never let her forget this.

Changingnames2002 · 05/12/2025 22:06

After my c-section, lots of morphine and severely anaemic amongst other things, sleep deprivation from baby being in NICU I just remember collapsing in the bathroom with 2 midwives either side of me trying to insist to them that I wasn’t just very drunk… bit embarrassing!

Nomorebullshitnotavailable · 05/12/2025 22:07

After keyhole surgery years ago I was hopped up on something and was obsessed with the straw in my drink. My mum and husband were there and apparently I kept telling them in loud whispers to JUST TAKE THE STRAW.

Luckily my husband is terribly kind to me and I still have that straw in my cutlery drawer almost 8 years later.

GhostInTheWashingMachine · 05/12/2025 22:07

I've had therapeutic ketamine...after you wake up you feel exactly as if you're very drunk, and have all sorts of very very important things to tell whoever's in earshot—all of which are in fact completely trivial and which you have trouble communicating because you don't have full control of your lips and tongue.

This happens at more or less regular intervals, so it can be embarrassing seeing my doctor if I happen to remember what rubbish I was boring him silly with the time before.

CatPawsAreCute · 05/12/2025 22:09

Oh yes! I had a procedure ladt year under sedation and started taking my clothes off afterwards. 😂

TiredAndUseless1493 · 05/12/2025 22:10

The doctor who did my egg collection for IVF said I was hilarious under sedation then refused to tell me what I said.
I can only remember telling my husband that the hospital trolley was the comfiest bed I’d ever slept on and we had to get one at home.

Bowup · 05/12/2025 22:12

I was sedated once, and convinced I was at a rave, I think all the machine sounds blended to make a track. Apparently I was whooping and all sorts 🙈 and asking the nurses to come to the bogs with me for a ciggie. Was very surprised to come out of it, and find myself in a hospital.

Sbmpp · 05/12/2025 22:14

As a former nurse I can assure you we don’t judge nor do we repeat anything we’ve heard (It goes beyond HIPPA here in the US).

Toddlerteaplease · 05/12/2025 22:16

Looked after many teenagers on ketamine post spinal surgery. They are very amusing, and it makes a stressful time a bit better for everyone.

Pavementworrier · 05/12/2025 22:17

This is why I'll never ever accept sedation

Local or GA or nothing

toddlertoenail · 05/12/2025 22:18

I talked absolute garbage when sedated even told the anaesthetist I had ‘junky jaw’ 🫣 mortified!!

CointreauVersial · 05/12/2025 22:18

Coming round on a trolley on my way to the recovery ward, I found myself in floods of tears. I was wailing to the porter wheeling me along - "Pleeeeease can you hold my haaaaand?". Bless him, he had a good chuckle, and held my hand all the way there.

CatPawsAreCute · 05/12/2025 22:19

Oh my, these are hilarious!!!!

I've just remembered when I had surgery years ago under GA when I started to come round I was convinced we were in outer space.

One of the assistants had a bandana on his head with cartoon spaceman, so that must have triggered it.

Vera87 · 05/12/2025 22:21

God last year as coming round I was shouting “this is good shit” through the corridors as being wheeled back to the ward haha

Dollymylove · 05/12/2025 22:27

Coming round from GA i got into my head that the Taliban were after me. Im not sure whether I said it out loud. I rather hope I didnt 🤣🤣

I had pethidine during my first labour and it sent me scatty. I was having a really difficult birth and the obstetrician was called. When he came in I shouted “and here’s the birthday boy” and started encouraging everybody to sing to him while singing myself. I have absolutely no recollection of this. There were witnesses 😆

This made me laugh out loud! I’m sure I was also given a dose of pethidine during labour but reading all these I can’t have cos I was still in so much pain and I didn’t tell anyone about it Elvis Costello or anything!

Gas and air plus an epidural tho, that was a game changer, I felt like I was at a party! I was having a great time chatting to the nurse and telling her I was pleased she was a lesbian because “at least you’ll know what you’re looking down there, I’ve never seen a vagina close up” CRINGE I really hope she wasn’t offended, I meant it in the nicest possible complimentary way.

CoodleMoodle · 05/12/2025 22:30

After dental surgery I had a very animated rant about how I was perfectly fine because I knew the door out of the building was a push and not a pull, and could a person who was under heavy sedation know that? No!

DH was not convinced and still insisted on doing the driving on the way home.

Mollypolly2610 · 05/12/2025 22:32

Much younger I came round from a small op and found out it was me singing South of the Border down Mexico Way in a loud voice I don't even know that song!!

rightoguvnor · 05/12/2025 22:37

DH was totally embarrassing as he came round after his vasectomy (this was quite a many years ago, nowadays I expect they just take a paracetamol) - he kept telling the nurses that it was his Xmas present to me (it was December).
great present that was, he was laid up for the next week or so moaning and crying about the pain in his balls.

HoppingPavlova · 05/12/2025 22:51

This is why I'll never ever accept sedation. Local or GA or nothing

You do realise much of this is also relevant to coming out of a GA right?

Apparently, I was either marrying or married to Jon Bon Jovi. Unsurprisingly, none of the staff actually expected he was making an appearance🤣.

IsItTimeToRetireYet · 05/12/2025 23:08

Back when dentists could give a GA for wisdom tooth removal, I woke up being held down by a dental nurse, had kicked my shoes off in some kind of struggle and they had landed on opposite sides of the room. I was walked home by then-boyfriend, which should have taken 10 mins but took longer as every flower I saw had to be deeply appreciated.

Recently had surgery and in a pre-op briefing the nurse said they encourage patients to get up and about soon after surgery. I must have deeply internalized this as I woke up convinced that I had to walk out of the recovery room after a 3hr op. The nurse reassured me that I was already in my bed and would be wheeled back to the ward, but I went on to ask every medical person I saw if it was time for me to walk yet. A nurse eventually asked me where I was planning on walking to with my oxygen, drip, and a compression machine squeezing my lower legs!

mrssnowfairy · 05/12/2025 23:12

if its any consolation i aggressively made animal noises at anyone i saw and responded by mooing when people spoke to me🥴
