Nightmare getting medication

Lovecatssowonderfullypretty · 03/12/2025 09:38

I have a chronic condition visiting unfortunately relapsed in September.

Because of this I'm not allowed to drive for several months.

I live very rurally and my surgery is about 30 minutes drive away.

No others closer.

No public transport whete I live.

Surgery did have delivery car but have been told as I'm not housebound so can't use it.

Cannot cycle for health reasons.

Surgery refuses to do online ordering and delivery.

I begged the outside manager for help, explaining that I would have to go off my needs. He said tough.

Yes I have friends and family but they are helping me do much stm and it means then taking off time in office hours.

Any thoughts?

If this is something that is likely to happen often I think the only sustainable option is to move if you're also going to need trips to hospital and appointments etc.. Otherwise I'd use an online pharmacy and get them delivered that way.

They refuse to do online orders.

Odd blood test but nothing else.

no busses? Taxis? Could you ask a good smartian on facebook? Do pharmacies local to you not deliver? Any more local surgeries?

BrokenWorldRecord · 03/12/2025 09:49

In your previous thread you said you were married. This is what marriage is about - in sickness and in health. I’m sure that no matter how many hours your spouse works, there is time to pick up a prescription before/after work or during a break. If your spouse can find time to eat, they can find time to pick up a prescription.

No, you take the prescription and use it at an online pharmacy, not the online version of your normal one. May cost but sounds like your only option.

jomaIone · 03/12/2025 09:52

Can you surgery send your prescription to a local pharmacy who deliver? Most pharmacies deliver these days and I'm sure would understand your predicament!

Lovecatssowonderfullypretty · 03/12/2025 09:55

No other surgeries,.

Taxis sometimes but very hot and miss because they don't like coming all the way out.

The bit I'm crud about is refusing to engage with online ordering, just send archaic.

jomaIone · 03/12/2025 09:56

Online ordering is difficult as they have to pay for the service which many GPs can't afford to do unfortunately

Not bring deliberately obtuse, but he do I get there, pick up and to the nearest pharmacy and back?

DH is STBXH for some excellent. Reason and house on market.

Same as ordering anything online...

My sympathies, what a PITA for you. Our GP surgery are the same, they say they get a small percentage of each prescription paid to them if we use the attached pharmacy and technically we can take our prescriptions elsewhere but they won't issue them electronically and the paper version has to be collected from the GP reception desk during their working hours, but they won't issue the prescription earlier to ensure continuity of medication . It's a really obstructive way of doing it but it appears no policies are being broken.

Can you put a friend out one last time and get them to take you to the pharmacy to collect your order and then for your next prescription ask the doctor to prescribe three month's worth? Tell them you are having trouble collecting it on time etc and at least it's less hassle for the next few months.

I'm in the exact same position as you; rural, no public transport, unreliable taxis and a GP surgery who won't issue electronic prescriptions. I have a chronic condition, luckily I can still drive but I can for-see that the only way forward will be to move house at some point, not least because it's a 40 mile plus round trip for a blood test or hospital visit. The infrastructure just isn't here. My husband is very resistant to the idea and I don't blame him. I did think if the worst came to the worst and neither my husband or myself could manage it, I could put a call out on the village Facebook page and try to find someone who may be able to collect for me if no one else was available, it does seem that quite often there are requests for lifts to the hospital, train station etc if anyone is going that way at X date and y time and people do step up, but it really isn't an ideal solution.

You’ve got an answer excuse for everything.

You call the doctor who prescribes the medication (GP, consultant, etc), ask them to send the prescription to the pharmacy. The pharmacy receives it. The pharmacy fills it. The pharmacy sends it to you. But I don’t think you want a solution, you want sympathy.

What about your 5 children? The youngest is around 11, according to your posts, so you must have at least 1 who is old enough to pick up a prescription.

CakeIsNotAvailable · 03/12/2025 10:30

It sounds like you need to move house. Even if you get your licence back soon, it sounds like you'll be utterly snookered if you need to stop driving again in future. I don't drive and I've chosen to live in a town with good public transport links and where most things are walkable.

ittakes2 · 03/12/2025 10:38

My understanding is if you have meds on repeat you can just access a bar code on your nhs app so then use that to order from whatever chemist you want in any part of the country and then choose one which delivers?

Thank you to all the posters who have read the thresds and provided constructive advice.

So this is another thing that didn’t happen….mumsnet seems to be full of them especially in the winter!

If it’s your medication you are talking about there are plenty of online pharmacies you can use that will sort the issue out for you, just sign up to one

Pepperedpickles · 03/12/2025 15:45

I am housebound a lot of the time and live rurally and have 25 prescriptions a day including a complex immunosuppressive medication. I use pharmacy2u - you just google it and sign up online and put in the medication you need and your doctor authorises it online and they send it out to you. If you have a medical exemption which means you don’t have to pay (like me) this can also be taken into account.

PropertyD · 03/12/2025 15:50

Is it me or do some threads just dont make sense? There was another one and there were so many suggestions yet the OP battered them all away.

There is no aspect of your life that wont improve by moving into a more civilised location. You are isolated, vulnerable and in a terrible and abusive dynamic. Please move, I really think your life would change so much. I know its not easy, but you deserve to be free, safe, loved, protected and cared for. X

I know lots of PP have suggested online pharmacies to you which is still an issue to get started as you can't get to the surgery to collect the prescription to send to them.

Have a look online for volunteer drivers in your locality. They aren't free but only charge mileage so considerably cheaper than a taxi. Certainly the ones in our area (rural also) do not turn people down because of their remote location, as long as they have availability for the longer time slot it would take.

If you are struggling and wanted to PM your location I could look into it for you.

Hope you get sorted soon, very frustrating system!

HaveACheekyChristmas · 03/12/2025 17:22

Have you looked into whether there are charities that can help you with volunteers who may collect/deliver?

Sorry to hear about your abusive ex-h but this may open a door to support charities for female victimes of violence, depending on your age - Age Concern etc.

Beyond that if you are willing but appreciate you may not be, to post a broad area where you a living (like North East) you may find people here who are willing to help.
