To think this is really rude?

My flat is part of a larger building that currently has scaffolding up because the owners are having some work done. Late this morning (around 11.45), I heard the builders showing the owners around. My curtains were closed, but they could probably tell I was still in bed.

I then heard the woman mutter “what a lazy girl” and “get a job!” as they went past. I assume because she saw me lying down.
For context (not that I should have to explain), I’m an adult with a full-time professional job and I simply had the day off today.

I’m honestly fuming. I work hard, earn a good salary and live in a nice flat. The cheek of her making comments like that about a stranger!

I’d be irrationally irritated by that comment. You’re totally allowed to be lazy in your own home!

Terrytheweasel · 02/12/2025 23:29

I would be having a chat with the builders to make sure they never do that again.

I genuinely think the woman is a total moron though. You could be ill, grieving, having a day off (as you were). You mustn’t let it affect you as she really is a complete idiot.

Theslummymummy · 02/12/2025 23:58

How could they see you laying down if your curtains were shut? I'd definitely have shouted fuck off

Jane143 · 03/12/2025 02:12

Get some curtains or keep windows closed. I’d hate knowing people could see me. She was very rude

Lurkingandlearning · 03/12/2025 03:01

Yes it was rude but also incredibly stupid. As PP said you could have been a nightshift worker, you might have been ill, it could’ve been your day off. Just focus on what morons they are. And nosy morons too. Sure, they will have noticed your window was slightly open but looking into your room wasn’t necessary.

Keeping that window closed while the scaffold is up might be a good idea if only because the work they are doing is likely to be dusty

I had a conversation with someone promoting Reform the other day. They’d retired in their 50’s on a final salary pension after just 20 years of work but were aggressively calling everyone else lazy. I match that already and many of us will have worked 40+ years before we get anywhere near retirement. Some people are just dicks, don’t let it get to you x

ktopfwcv · 03/12/2025 06:13

The owners said that?!!

ThisZanyPinkSquid · 03/12/2025 07:41

You are in a professions job meaning you have likely come across assholes in your time …she’s clearly one so forget and move on.

KmcK87 · 03/12/2025 08:12

Oh I’d have had to shout something to them to make them feel awkward. Imagine having no concept of days off or shift working in this day and age.

My window was open and my the bottom part of my blinds were open. I assumed they couldn’t see my but I’m guessing they could from the angle. They were very near my window so it felt quite intrusive.

You’re right, it is rude and intrusive. I often stay in bed late on my days off - it saves putting the heating on! I’m also in a flat (2nd floor) and some guys came with a ladder to fix a drainpipe so they could see right in!

Jorge14 · 03/12/2025 17:58

Yeah really rude

PoliteRaven · 03/12/2025 18:06

So she owns your building? She sounds like an arsehole but also stupid as you're making money for her! I can understand your annoyance, people making assumptions is one of my pet peeves. Maybe she was throwing her weight around in front of the builders for a pathetic show of power.

How did you not say something back?? You should have pulled her up on it!! Vile woman. You could be bloody dying for all she knows.
