Am I being ridiculous?

Or maybe superstitious. I’m in remission from cancer for almost 18 months. I love to travel and have been planning a couple of trips. My local airport has announced it will be starting a new service to Rome from April. I would love to go but my Mum visited Rome after chemo nearly 40 years ago and died seven months later. I’m terrified of history repeating itself. Am I being ridiculous?

Kindly, yes you are.

Graciously · 01/12/2025 17:09

You are. It’s a sign that you should go. Rome is amazing. Go on book it

FastTurtle · 01/12/2025 17:09

You know you are but it’s fine to pick somewhere else to go.

Goditsmemargaret · 01/12/2025 17:27

Sorry about your mum, you must have been young. Chemo (and cancer) is scary under any circumstances but you actually lost your mum as a result so I think it's normal that any similarities would be frightening.

If you're not ready to go to Rome, don't.

AwfullyGood · 01/12/2025 17:31

You know you are being superstitious but it's very understandable.

If you think about it logically your mum did a lot of other things too in that seven months but you can't avoid them all - enjoyed a cup of tea, read a book for example.

Go to Rome & enjoy yourself. You deserve a nice trip after all your cancer treatment.

HeadyLamarr · 01/12/2025 17:32

Yes, you are. Go to Rome and have a marvellous time.

AudiobookListener · 01/12/2025 17:34

There is no point going if it's going to cause worry beforehand and you don't enjoy it when you are there. There are thousands of other interesting places to go. Choose one of them and have a great time. I'm sure you deserve it.

Sidebeforeself · 01/12/2025 17:36

Turn it on its head. Maybe its your Mum sending you a sign that you should go and enjoy it for the both of you.

( I don’t necessarily believe in that but it might help you)

Hotflushesandchilblains · 01/12/2025 17:41

bery gently, yes, you are looking for a connection between unconnected events. Wishing you joy and health.

TeenLifeMum · 01/12/2025 17:44

Totally ridiculous, however, I’d go somewhere else. My life has mirrored my mum’s in ways I couldn’t anticipate (2nd pregnancy twins - identical so not hereditary and statistically rare for an identical twin to have identical twins).

Berlinlover · 01/12/2025 17:45

@Goditsmemargaret I was 10 when my Mum died so yes very young. I’m probably still traumatised from her death to be honest but I do remember she had a wonderful time in Rome.
