To be uncomfortable with this?

Friend has asked me to take her child to an event about 25 mins away and bring her back.
Child is 4 and is small for her age. She said she can give me her booster. It's just a seat booster, not a high backed.

AIBU to be uncomfortable with this?

I would be ok with it. But it’s your car and it’s about what you’re comfortable with.

VikaOlson · 01/12/2025 15:05

Legally they need to be at least 15kg for a booster cushion but a 4 year old is probably too short anyway. If over 15kg ask for a high back seat, if under 15kg you need a harness.

IHateTheElf · 01/12/2025 15:11

She doesn't own one. They all have booster cushions

Just say no, you're not comfortable with doing this.

SaveMeNow2024 · 01/12/2025 15:16

I would say no.

It's your responsibility as the driver to ensure children are in the correct seats, so if you aren't comfortable don't do it.

IHateTheElf · 01/12/2025 15:32

Is it the correct seat though? I'm genuinely shocked he's in it but I don't know if it's actually illegal?

How tall is he and what does he weigh?

IHateTheElf · 01/12/2025 15:40

I've no idea but she's considerably smaller than my daughter who is 104cm

VikaOlson · 01/12/2025 15:44

Unless you know the child's size you won't know if the seat is legal.

Soupdragon41 · 01/12/2025 16:11

It's legal to use booster seats or booster cushions as car seats for children, but the rules differ depending on whether the seats are old or new.
Since 1 March 2017, backless booster seats can only be used with children taller than 125cm and weighing more than 22kg.
However, backless booster seats made before this date are still legal and approved for use by children weighing 15-36kg (although we wouldn't recommend this).
Shops can also still sell backless booster seats that were approved for use by children weighing between 15kg and 36kg before March 2017. Check the label before you buy to make sure the booster seat corresponds with the size of your child.

from the Which website

I would send her this link and say:

Can I just check on X's weight and height? The law has changed about backless booster seats and I'm sorry but I'm not prepared to risk a £500 fine and points on my licence.

SchrodingersParrot · 01/12/2025 16:21

Why can't won't she take the child herself?

IHateTheElf · 01/12/2025 16:22

She's taking her other children somewhere else
