Has anyone been to Haworth?

Thinking of booking a last minute trip there with my kids and dog for New Year’s Eve. It’s somewhere I’ve wanted to go for a while as it looks so picturesque and quaint. However I’m wondering if this is the best time to to, will the Brontë museum and high street shops be shut on New Year’s Eve/day? Are there nice walks in the area and is it a suitable place for kids? Ages are 4 and 11.

Yes, lots. We go every Christmas for their nativity procession. The Brontë museum is good but it’s small and I’d argue best for older kids. They do have a couple of activities for younger children, it was making your own Brontë spoon when we last went…

It’s generally lovely. Lots of nice little indie shops including a great sweet shop. The steam train is of course a big tourist attraction. Definitely many walks around there, the Brontë waterfall is a good one. Just be warned the weather might not be the best and there isn’t much else to do outside of the aforementioned.

It's not very big. Basically one long street with shops and the Brontë museum at one end. And the steam railway at the other.

Very pretty, but overrun with tourists, especially around Christmas. It's a bit ruined now for me tbh, I preferred how it was 20 years ago.

There are plenty of walks around there, depending on how adventurous you want to be. Up to the Brontë falls is nice or drive over to Hardcastle Crags. Head into Hendon Bridge and Heptonstall too. And Wycollar a little further on

There are lovely walks in the area, but if the weather is bad you'd need to be prepared to occupy everyone indoors.
I don't think the museum will keep a 4 year old occupied for long to be honest. Looks like it will be open. Steam train rides are a good day out, but again, when you get off you might need to be prepared for some harsh weather.

I'd say a bit of a gamble with children that age.

Lots of nice walks in Penistone Hill park, Brontë museum was shut between Christmas and new year last year. It’s bigger than you’d think but it’s just one street that you’d probably want to visit, the rest is fairly residential. It’s lovely for a day trip if you’re local, not sure I’d want a weekend there.

Just on the local walks there is a very big, popular fell race there on the NYE, which lots of people do in fancy dress which can be fun to watch the start of, but might influence where you’d want to be walking while it’s on!!

The Brontë museum is wonderful, if you’re a fan of their work. I enjoyed it hugely, but my sister and I almost certainly knew more about the Brontës than the guides, so it was hugey appealing. I left my four year old playing in the garden with DH. It wouldn’t have interested him. Again, I loved the walk to Top Withens, but I like hillwalking, even in muddy and exposed conditions.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 01/12/2025 11:27

It is beautiful there. I don't think the kids would get a lot of enjoyment from the Bronte museum. Lots of nice walks. Steam train if it's running at that time is a must. East Riddellsden Hall is worth a visit

Two nights may be a bit much if it’s just one street I guess. If it were just Dh and I then we’d get cabined up in a pub but probably not possible with kids! Just wondering really if there will be much going on NYE/new years day and if anything will be open mostly. I imagine the shops will all shut New Year’s Day.

Cobbles and Clay is good for kids - pottery painting. Worth booking as it does get busy.

Hoppinggreen · 01/12/2025 11:48

I like Howarth and its not far from me but the weath ris usually pretty bad around that time and there isn't a lot to do for kids, espcially if all the shops etc are closed

LadyPenelope68 · 01/12/2025 11:51

I live near there. It’s one street of quant looking shops, but nothing much more than that. There’s the Brontë Parsonage which is interesting IF you are into the Brontes. Most shops and the parsonage will be closed on New Year’s Day. To be honest, it’s over hyped and very boring for children the age of yours.

HeatonGrov · 01/12/2025 12:02

On a dry day Haworth can be breathtakingly beautiful. Lots of walks on the moors - you can visit Wuthering Heights (Top Withens) and see where the Bronte sisters got their inspiration.

The Parsonage is intersesting if you are a Bronte fan. But quite small and cramped and not much to interest a 4 year old tbh. Will be closed on NYD.

But on a wet day it is miserable. You see why there was a 50% + infant mortality rate back in the day. Cold. Damp. Bleak. Just horrid.

The Worth Valley Steam railway is fun for young children. They usually do mince pie specials around Christmas and NY. You would have to check for NYD. And there are train museums with old rolling stock at some of the stations.

Pollyanna87 · 01/12/2025 12:27

Lovely place but very small. I’m planning on doing a walk to the Wuthering Heights houses, but I’m going to wait until closer to the summer. Not just for the temperature but for the longer days, looks like a bit of a distance.

Pollyanna87 · 01/12/2025 12:27

There’s a steam railway close by.

AgDulAmach · 01/12/2025 12:43

As others have said - it is beautiful but very small and not a huge amount to do, for kids or adults, particularly if the weather is bad.

I would hate to be in such a hilly place when it is snowing or icy.

canuckup · 01/12/2025 13:15

Howarth is beautiful.

Definitely go to The Silent Inn for food.

The cobbled streets are great in Howarth are great, Heptonstall is close by which is super for walks.
