Seems reasonable for fillet 🤷‍♀️

I don't think you understand supply and demand combined with free-market economics. Most Haddock, sold in this country, comes from the Barents Sea is quota limited and the quota has been cut. Other fish are available, sea bass and sea bream are £3.50 each in Morrisons (20% off on fridays with a More Card), mackerel and herrings are also fairly cheap. It's a shame Tesco axed there fresh fish counters, but hardly surprising when the majority of the public will only eat fish in batter or breadcrumbs, and as for fish fingers........

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 01/12/2025 10:27

Twice now I’ve bought a couple of Young’s breaded ‘white fish’ fillets for around half price in Sainsbury’s, with my Nectar card. Around £2.50, and perfectly good.

Just yesterday I also bought a good sized joint of pork (British, I won’t buy foreign pork) from Sainsbury’s, for around £4.50, with my Nectar card. IMO fantastic value. We had it yesterday, and very nice it was, too.

If only the seas hadn't been massively overfished

I loved the fresh fish counter because if I went at the right time I could fill my freezer with reduced fish, but for Tesco I guess that isn't an economical business model!

RosemaryandTruffle · 01/12/2025 12:03

Are you complaining about the price of eating a fairly large size of protein x 2 for £5??

You do know that fishermen do very dangerous jobs don't you?

I think this is a bargain.

Greggsit · 01/12/2025 12:27

Fresh fish is getting more and more expensive because quotas keep being cut. Supply drops, prices go up. Have a look at where your fish is actually coming from. Particularly if you're buying "White fish" instead of a named species.

WestwardHo1 · 01/12/2025 12:34

People who think fish should be cheap in the supermarket (less that £5? Really?) are a big reason why overfishing and ecosystem collapses are a thing.

There is not an inexhaustible supply of haddock or any whitefish

AliceAbsolum · 01/12/2025 14:47

But why was it different over the summer when it was a pound cheaper?

OP posts:
ChikinLikin · 01/12/2025 14:50

Maybe because there was more haddock available in the summer so tesco could buy it more cheaply.

Do you think it costs exactly the same to catch and process fish all year round, regardless of supply/demand and just the logistics of actually catching the fish?

Probably the same reason why strawberries are cheaper in June than they are in November.

There will be other cheaper fish, expand your fish eating horizons.

QuiltPlantCandle · 01/12/2025 15:11

I'm in the US. Believe me, your grocery costs are so much lower than ours. I wish I could get fish for 5 pounds.

Ginmonkeyagain · 01/12/2025 15:13

Oh, just seen that is for two fillets. So add some boiled potatoes or oven chips and frozen peas and you have a fairly substantial evening meal for about £3.50 /£4.00 per person? Seams reasonable.

Haddock (Fish) (68%),

That's terrible value.

Wow. Well spotted. I'm not a fish eater but buy for DH. I've just looked and Waitrose, M&S and Russell's (I buy from Ocado) and none of them are above 68% fish.

I'm shocked. Are they pumping them full of water like the poor chickens? How can fillet of fish have more than 20% other ingredients? Obviously aware of the breadcrumbs

WestwardHo1 · 01/12/2025 17:06

Then it's not fish is it?

Go to an actual fishmonger, be discerning about your choices, eat what's in season, avoid trawled or netted or long lined fish. People need to be pickier about what they choose to eat.
