At what point do demands against council proposals become unreasonable?

I have every sympathy for this lady but this whole idea that she will have to sell her house and move away if the council build a statue of a Bull on her route home because it will constantly remind her that her husband died after being trampled by a herd of cows does seem a bit of a stretch.

This is a county famous for its cattle where all around there a fields full of them. How far do we go with this sort of thing? No bridge should be built on my route home because my husband fell from one and I’ll have to sell my house if they go ahead? No bakery on my route home because my husband died in a freak accident with a doughnut and I’ll have to sell my house if they open one?

The council have already made several adjustments to the design of the statue and have installed additional fences to obscure the proposed location for the benefit of this lady but this is In a county where practically every farm has cows in fields. Why isn’t she insisting the farmers stop letting their cows out to graze in any fields she has to drive past to get home?

Wendy Pleasent. She has grey hair in a bob and is wearing glasses, a polo neck jumper and sheepskin-type gilet

So she'd be triggered if she ever went to Birmingham or Milton Keynes or Turriff?

It's sad this lady's husband died but unfortunately it's more common than people might think. According to https://cattlesafety.co.uk/facts-stats/when-cows-attack/ there are an average of 4-5 people killed by cattle in the UK each year and 74 reported deaths since 2000.

She just needs to move, if that’s how she feels. Sorry for her loss and all, but she can’t dictate stuff like this.

I once walked along a footpath through fields and as I went over a style found myself in a field full of cows with calves. I couldn’t go back because I was losing daylight so I continued around the edge of the field to the other side but it was a bit worrying because I didn’t know if they would be protective but I think I’d be more bemused if I had got trampled and my loved ones started taking umbrage to statues of cows.

Why is she being indulged at all?

tanstaafl · 01/12/2025 10:10

I’m with the woman on this one and wondering if this is a good use of council money.

Trouble is it sounds like they have already started pandering to her demands by altering the design of the statue and putting up fences so I can’t see her letting this go now. It won’t have been the council who went to the BBC news either. I wouldn’t be surprised if there is a petition in the pipeline somewhere. Ideally I think they just shouldn’t have entertained her demands in the first place because now she’s succeeded in getting alterations made she will probably want more and more. Far better to come to terms with your grief then get embroiled in pointless spats over silliness like this.

But if you put the same logic into other structures, people would be making all sorts of ridiculous demands. Where does it stop? No bridges because my great aunt Gladys fell off one? No trees because my husband died when he crashed his car into one? No bungalows because my granny died in one?

It’s not though. All Councils are given specific funds for spending on arts which doesn’t come out of their own budgets. It’s usually provided by other organisations involved in the arts.

I can’t edit the original post now but as more than one person has mentioned it, I think it’s important to note this won’t be coming from Council funds. All Councils are provided with a separate pot of money specifically for spending on the arts which usually comes from other organisations like the Arts Council, so it’s not the councils money being wasted as such.

Most people who grew up in a rural community will know of someone who's been killed or seriously injured by cattle. When I was about 12, a friend's uncle was killed by his own cattle. His widow and children continued to live on and run the farm, there wasn't really any alternative.

Mochudubh · 01/12/2025 11:43

Just some of the cattle sculptures from around the UK. Those are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head, there must be dozens more.

This with bells on. I seriously think half the population today needs this reminder.

Perhaps the council should pay for a nice trip to Birmingham Bullring for her as compensation.
