AIBU to want curtains?

I’m getting bi-fold doors. What do I need curtains or blinds?

I’ve been looking at houses, and many people don’t bother with anything, Is this unreasonable?

I wouldnt add curtains or blinds to those.

AgapanthusPink · 30/11/2025 10:21

Agree. The only reason I would add blinds is if the sun gets in your eyes when sitting at the dining table. Definitely not curtains.

SquigglePigs · 30/11/2025 10:44

I'd want curtains on the those too. In winter there will be a lot of cold off the glass and the reflections when it's dark outside would bug me too.

Yes, that’s my thinking. I want to be cosy, not clinical.

We had that and lived with it through one winter and then got curtains. Temperature and light control winter and summer and privacy. Pleased we did.

176509user · 30/11/2025 10:47

I’d put curtains there too. As @SquigglePigs said.

ComtesseDeSpair · 30/11/2025 10:49

You can have whatever you want. The house in the photo is clearly decorated in a minimalist style by the owners, and that’s their taste. I wouldn’t have curtains or blinds either because I also prefer that look, it’s just preference.

FrankSinatraonToast · 30/11/2025 10:49

Those are the sort of windows featured in murder mysteries where the killer is lurking outside and is able to spy on the intended victim as he/she goes about their daily business and never has blinds or curtains.

Statsquestion1 · 30/11/2025 10:51

What kind of curtains are you thinking? I couldn’t imagine curtains on those. It would totally take away from the point of them.

Obeseandashamed · 30/11/2025 11:11

I’ve never seen curtains on bifold doors but can imagine blinds would work.

TheChosenTwo · 30/11/2025 11:15

We have doors like this with no curtains or blinds as that is our preference.
We shutters on all other windows in the house because we hate the fussiness of curtains and didn’t see any blinds we liked.
We are quite a minimalist house though. Never seen curtains on these but you can have blinds fitted within the panes of glass I believe, not sure as I’ve never looked into it myself.

DappledThings · 30/11/2025 11:22

I'd want curtains too. We have French windows in the kitchen and haven't got round to putting curtains up. Every winter when it's dark and cold I remember how much I hate not being able to close the non-existent curtains. I'm also considering shutters though.

patooties · 30/11/2025 11:26

I have French doors on my kitchen. And curtains - when we didn’t have any it was really discombobulating thinking someone might be lurking 👀.
It also looks miles better - and keeps heat in.

This. That's a lot of cool glass. The acoustics will be fairly unforgiving too.

Plus anyone outside will be able to watch you, and you will be unaware. Do you have a dog?

Bifolds are great if you overlook the sea, lake or cliff but they certainly aren't snug.

JudgeBread · 30/11/2025 11:31

My mam has those, she put in curtains because it gets fecking cold in the room in winter without them.

justpassmethemouse · 30/11/2025 11:32

It’s up to you, with your style preferences and privacy needs.

I have a balcony door in my living room and I wanted a colourful sheen curtain to let the light in but keep the privacy for during the day, and then normal curtains on top for night time. I like the texture of layering.

Well that's comforting 😁

Yes 😂😂 I'm always shouting " close your curtains" at the TV!

TeaBiscuitsNaptime · 30/11/2025 11:34

If you have privacy glass/film it's not needed IMO. They look lovely 😍

Twoshoesnewshoes · 30/11/2025 11:47

We have large French doors in our breakfast room - we also have large curtains! It gets hot in summer and cold in winter, the curtains make a real difference.
we had a rail fitted inside the window recess which looks neater imo

TeaBiscuitsNaptime · 30/11/2025 11:54

I won't lie though, I have 2 big glass windows on my kitchen and I did put a net/voile curtain over it. You can still see out and it does make the place seem more cozy/secure

stealthsquirrelnutkin · 30/11/2025 12:18

Why not have blinds between the glass panes, then you can pull them up to the top of the window where they'll be out of sight until you need to drop them for privacy when it gets dark outside? They'll also do a better job of keeping the sun out in summer and the heat inside in winter than loose blinds or curtains.

Lifejigsaw · 30/11/2025 16:03

Yes absolutely curtains - just have long enough poles that you can pull them right back and tie them on the day, then you have the best of both!
