To think I can get rid of a painful cold by Monday?

I have such an important meeting on Monday and I have finally caught a cold at work mixing with cold ridden people.

It's sort throat, ear ache, and a chest sore ness that make me cough

Is it feasible I can veto this thing by Monday or so colds have a lifespan

Basically this meeting is not happening and it took ages to arrange

I'm like a sheepdog herding all the participants into one room and now I'm ill

Personally I’m find getting out in the fresh air and blasting it out helps!! Wrapped up and once you’re able to.

One thing I always swore by when I had sinus infections (thankfully solved by sinus surgery) was a bath as hot as you can stand it (you should be sweating), and a big bowl of boiling water with Vicks Vaporub in it, melted on top. It steams into the air and fills the air with the Vicks, which helps shift everything. I sweat it out for at least an hour, or even longer.

Fresh air.

yes it seems against resting, but it helps you breath, clears sinus’s and I find helps any headache.
So I suggest wrapping up and a short 10 mins stroll if you can around neighbourhood.

Also remember to open windows at home for fresh air. It’s seems counterintuitive also when cold, but a full blast of fresh air each morning and again around 3pm before sun goes down will help you sleep better without stale air

As well as everything else people have said.
Take an extra strength GINGER SHOT daily.
They're vile but they seem to work for me.

I did steam inhalation a few times a day with chamomile, eucalyptus and lemon essential oils. It may have been a coincidence but the cold cleared up in 2 days and I usually have them for a week or 2.

As well as the suggestions here listen to what your body is telling you. If it’s exhausted, rest. When you feel a bit more awake have the walk.

Try not to worry about work - set a worry window, and if you can relax with podcasts, easy TV, sleep

Take Night Nurse liquid before bed. It helps you sleep and works miracles overnight.

Send someone out for Sambucol and take it religiously. Good good, plenty of rest and you should be good to go on Monday.

My kid came down with it and has a huge exam Monday. What we did was rest, lemsip for the throat, nasal wash and then otravine at night to unblock the nose, soup and tea, lots fluids. Today hes feeling much better but has that rattly cough so exputex to tackle that. But it could have just been the rest. I wish I had me to look after me when im sick!

Me too. Just want someone else to decide everything and take charge.

Also just a reminder to check what you are taking as a couple of the things mentioned may have paracetamol so you don’t take much.

I had a horrible cold a couple of weeks ago, Friday and Saturday were the worst days, was a bit better by Sunday and a lot better on Monday. I also had to spend Saturday shopping, cleaning and tidying the house and was outside at the stables most of Sunday, so I definitely didn’t look after myself at all!

ShodAndShadySenators · 29/11/2025 09:17

The only thing I find makes a difference with a cold is rest as much as possible. Preferably a day in bed if that can be done. Ignore anything not desperately urgent or an emergency; if it can wait, let it.

You'll still be affected by Monday but you should be able to function OK. There's a cold virus going round our area that leaves a horrible lingering cough, we've all had it.

I've always hated the runny nose the most as being the most debilitating symptom and lying down really helps with that, if you're not dabbing at your nose with tissues continuously you don't get the sore nose, redness and peeling.

I do feel for you, it's doubly crap having to do stuff when you're ill because there's nobody else to do it. Sympathy...

Jumping in with a voice of hope. Last weekend I was a day behind you - started to feel ill Saturday afternoon, absolutely wiped out Sunday and Monday, was able to do the thing on Tuesday that had to be done. Went in just for the Tuesday meeting, kept the window open, apologised profusely to everyone at work (I normally get sooo irritated by people coming to work ill but it was generally acknowledged that it had taken so long to organise the Tuesday thing that this was the lesser of two evils). I drank literally gallons of water, took paracetamol and ibuprofen on a regular cycle, slept as much as humanly possible. If a night time cough is stopping you sleeping, try Benylin night time (it will totally knock you out so DO NOT take it in the daytime!!). Good luck.
