Ouija board

Reading another thread where OP daughter believes she is seeing a ghost, lots of the advice was it a medical issue there’s no such thing as ghosts etc. OP updated that her daughter disclosed her and her friends had used an ouija board and they were all upset as a result. I have never used one I am too skeptical (people close to me and I have had experiences that have no logical explanation) intrigued if anyone has used one ? Did anything happen?

OP posts:

They're obviously not real. It's all power of suggestion, etc. I think they frighten people because if you've used one, you will be more hypervigilant to weird shadows/noises you'd normally tune out, etc.

If ghosts were real and we're truly people who have died, why would they be haunting us? Most people aren't bad, so by that logic, there wouldn't be loads of evil spirits hanging around.

I'm an absolute non-believer, though I think you do believe in ghosts, you're automatically more suggestible and likely to be scared by a ooujia board.

My elder sister (very down to earth chemistry student) and her housemates used one ‘for a laugh’ in their old house in Aberdeen. Sister never expected anything to happen, so was freaked out when a large wooden wardrobe started moving about in her bedroom at night.
Said she’d never mess with an ouija board again.

Dbro, boarding at a cathedral school with several very ancient buildings, tried one with friends - again, ‘for a laugh’. He’d have been about 16.

He himself didn’t see or experience anything, but soon afterwards, one or two of the younger boys were very frightened by ‘something’ they’d seen or witnessed.
In the end, the bishop performed an exorcism, and the problem disappeared.
Dbro is another who wouldn’t use an ouija board again.

I don’t believe for a second the bishop did an exorcism. The Dean of the school probably said ‘God, Brian, we have a problem with some of the younger ones having nightmares after the annual ouija board experiment’, and Bishop Brian said ‘Tel, them I’ve exorcised it. Clears it up every time.’

Yes i did. Once only never again. Got into bed that night three knocks on the wall from the spare room. Terrified. Then another three knocks. Then another three. I was terrified. Nothing more happened after that.

BillieWiper · 29/11/2025 14:24

Of course nothing happens unless one or more of the participants move something.

It's just a silly game. Like Halloween stories. Ghosts, zombies, vampires, mummies, witches etc do not actually exist.

If anything comes through on a ouija board it wouldn't be a "ghost" or a dead loved one. The dead cant contact the living.

I remember at high school our class, out of the blue, being given a very strong lecture about the dangers of Ouija boards including a warning about opening doors you couldn't close. It was the one and only time anything like that was ever mentioned. It terrified me and stayed with me forever.
Looking back I wonder what prompted it. There were rumours (of course) that a girl, who had left school suddenly, had become possessed or had "gone mad" and been sent to a psychiatric hospital.
It's the first time I have thought of that in years but Ouija boards still scare me to such an extent that I would never touch one and previously warned all my children and their friends when they were in their teens against dabbling with them.

It's true though. It does open doors you can't close. But it's your own subconscious, not a spirit or demon. You can, quite literally, drive yourself mad. Your own brain will convince you that you are being haunted or hunted by something. It's terrifying, really, the power of the subconscious mind.

Ilovecakey · 29/11/2025 14:37

I dont see the point in playing with them as no good can come from it, either you dont believe in it so why do it? It's just a waste of your time and if it is real then theres only ever bad stories about things that have happened after people playing with them or like others have said you will just become scared and paranoid all the time

CoraLea · 29/11/2025 14:40

My mum/aunts/uncles did one when my nan was out once. She could tell as soon as she walked in. Obeah and duppies are real, don't fuck with that shit.

Muffsies · 29/11/2025 14:42

I don't believe in all that hocus pocus nonsense.

However, audio and visual hallucinations are very real, so is paranoia. Us humans are way more susceptible to suggestability and fear than we think, our brains trick us ALL the time.

There's a reason 3 different people can have 3 different versions of events, even when they all believe they're telling the truth. There's a reason that drugs trials are so difficult due to the placebo effect. Human experience is extremely fallible.

bestcatlife · 29/11/2025 14:44

My family are not 'woo' in the slightest, but I always remember my grandma telling me a story of when her and some friends got together and used a board, can't remember details as it was years ago but my grandma decided to sit it out for whatever reason while her friends continued to play.. however on their way home various things happened to them, one fell off their bike and injured themselves, one crashed their car, etc .. my grandma really wasn't bothered what I got up to (not in a bad way, we just didn't have the best relationship at times) but she wouldn't wind me up and wasn't a liar, but she told me not to go near these boards. It's something that's stuck in my mind ever since.

Ilovecakey · 29/11/2025 14:42

How could she tell?

She could feel something off.

When she died, all our dogs had a howling episode after each other in the middle of the night, starting the furthest working their way down to my mum's. So my sister who lived the furthest, her dog started carrying on at say 2.10am, mine did it at 2.15, my other sister that lived nearest was woken at 2.20 and then my mum's dog started up and woke her at 2.25 for instance. I think it was about 5, not 2. But it was just after the time my nan died, like she was visiting each of us. Very strange.

Ofc not, because they're dead. Ghosts and spirits are not real. Nothing can contact you from a ooujia board, because it's a toy that works on suggestions and messing with your unconscious mind.

So what did she do after she got home? Did anything strange happen in the house? Im really interested in this stuff although like i say would never do it.
Also i'm very sorry for the loss of your Mum

Well I wouldn't like to risk it to find out.

ThankGodItsAutumn · 29/11/2025 15:02

Well, shit.

I work in a secondary school medical room and we have more than enough mental health issues to deal with without a bunch of the kids getting hold of these bloody things over Christmas 🤦🏼‍♀️.

Ty, this was my nan though, my mum is still with us. My mum/aunts/uncles did this when they were teens. I think my nan smudged the house, prayed, did some sort of cleansing.

CoraLea · 29/11/2025 15:08

My MIL had strange things happen in her house. Her husband/my FIL died many years ago, but she would feel someone sitting on the end of the bed. Her daughter felt it as well. When she came in from being out, there would be talking, like the TV was on, and other people heard that, I did too once. There were always weird things happening in one of the bedrooms, my DH would feel like something was holding him down on his chest on the bed and one of his sisters felt whatever it was slap her as a kid.

U0KHun · 29/11/2025 15:09

I (and the friend I was with) both saw a golden retriever cocking his leg up a car wheel. When we got closer, we could see it was a man in a tan coloured set of overalls looking under the front of a car. 💁

hereismydog · 29/11/2025 15:10

I did one at school, was probably in Year 9.

My cat came home that night with a gaping wound in his neck, and it scared me silly. Took me a really long time to stop feeling like I’d caused that to happen to him, and that it was just a horrible coincidence.

DCat was fine (lived many more years!) but we never discovered what had caused such an injury. I would still never touch another ouija board again, though.

Karatema · 29/11/2025 15:20

Another one who used an ouija board as a teenager. Nothing happened except we spooked ourselves. I still don’t know who pushed the glass and my friends, still deny they did! 🤣

TemuTrinny · 29/11/2025 15:26

How do you make a Ouija board?

Take him to an art gallery.

Non Scots may not get this joke.

The same reason people have always told ghost stories around the campfire. The same reason people go to the cinema or turn out the lights at home to watch a slasher movie.

It's fun to suspend your disbelief for a while, or jump out of your skin, especially if it's a shared experience. Especially when you're young and naive and there's that tiny bit of doubt that maybe...just maybe...there's something more to it...👀

And like I said if it turns out there is more to it then its not going to be anything nice coming through is it? Of all the oujia board stories you've ever heard and ones you read on here, people who did experience something whether you believe it or not all say something bad happened and they would never do it again.
I've never heard or read about anyone saying their lovely dead relative came through and they had a nice conversation and then that was the end.

bacteriaphobia · 29/11/2025 15:43

I did them LOADS as a teenager. Others would do them and come in saying they’d moved and what had been spelt etc etc. every single time I went as well (50+) nothing happened. Then everyone said I ruined it so they didn’t include me again. I was really obsessed with it as well 😂 Clearly the spirits didn’t want to chat with me !
