To think yawning is rude?

Not normal yawning, but when you’re with people and sitting having food or drinks or whatever and someone is (genuinely) yawning, again and again. Not a subtle yawn, but a noisy yawn with no attempt to hide it.

Is it rude or can it not be helped?

YABU - it can’t be helped and people should be free to yawn in people’s faces
YANBU - it is rude not to attempt to hide the yawns with your hands and do it quietly, and if you’re that tired you should be away to bed not drinking and yawning

I yawn constantly back to back when my asthma is playing up. It's caused by low oxygen not sleepiness.

I have no control at all over it happening and find it very annoying.

I’ve just yawned about 7 times reading this! If I see a yawn, hear the word and apparently read the word yawn…. It’s makes me yawn!!

I yawn easily, often when I exercise and am warming up (it's apparently a cooling response) and also when there's high humidity in stuffy rooms. There's certain rooms I've been in (thinks of a certain English hut and yoga venue) that really set me off every time.

If you were at their house, I think they were giving you a hint to leave 😄

I'm yawning reading this. My hands would be covering and I'd attempt to not make noises though. But can't help the yawn. Yawn brings yawn...

I can't vote as I only agree with this part: it is rude not to attempt to hide the yawns with your hands.

Yawning, I was told, is often a reaction to the CO2 others are breathing out. I think there are other factors too. It can't be helped.

But I can't abide people not covering their mouths when coughing, and I think yawing is the same, similarly it should be followed by an "excuse me", "sorry", or "pardon".

It just happens.

I mean I generally try and cover my mouth when yawning but equally it's an involuntary action. If you yawn at someone looking at you, they will also yawn. (Fun way to know if people are watching you! 🤣)

SnowFrogJelly · 29/11/2025 01:33

Yawning is fine and natural if you just cover your mouth

Silverbirchleaf · 29/11/2025 02:14

I was always taught that continual yawning was rude also. Not an odd yawn, we’ve all done that, but repeated yawning or large yawns with sighs. It indicates they’re indifferent to you.
