Would you be happy with this cake

Aibu that this cake is not the cake in the picture and the colours are completely off? Picked it up today and was quite disappointed, the shade of green is awful! I’ve added pictures for comparison of what I ordered vs what I got.

I think unless you asked specifically for an exact cake like it it’s ok.

it’s a nice cake but clearly not identical

ComtesseDeSpair · 28/11/2025 15:25

I’d be happy, yes. Assuming your cake is the one on the right, it’s not identical (surely that’s a good thing? The cakes aren’t being made on a production line and will have some variation) but it looks professional, and has all the core elements of the example.

When you say you ordered it on a website, do you mean from an independent baker / cake store, or one of those websites like Caker Street who are essentially just an online storefront for the businesses who actually provide the cakes?

They're not the same, the second one is missing an inner layer of icing I think.

But they're both equally as nice. I want cake now.

The inner ring of shells was probably left off to give space for the name and “Happy Birthday”.
I agree with pp that it’s beautifully done, even though the (definitely green!) shade is a bit darker than the photo.

WallaceinAnderland · 28/11/2025 15:27

I thought you were complaining about the lighter green one as the darker green is much nicer.

BauhausOfEliott · 28/11/2025 15:32

It's impossible to match colours completely from a photograph, and colours appear different when viewed on different screens anyway.

Personally, I think the cake you received is nicer than the one in the website picture. The difference certainly isn't significant enough to give a second thought to.

Pippa12 · 28/11/2025 15:37

Is the icing green on the first pic- it looks cream to me 😂My DH is colour blind but is always saying I’m worse than him for getting mixed up!

That's the conclusion I came to too. I mean both cakes are awful, but I really couldn't tell which one the OP was complaining about - which one was the picture and which is the one she was given.

Is that true? (That it's on trend). I think it's awful, it looks like something my mother would have made in the 70's. Is that piping stuff back in? My mum will be delighted if she's on trend. 🤣

My dd had one that style last year for her 18th.
This was DD’s from a professional cake maker, she was very happy with it.

Colours are darker than you asked.

Picklelily99 · 28/11/2025 18:19

I like both! I mean, you wouldn't want an EXACT replica would you?

Toddlerteaplease · 28/11/2025 18:19

I think the second one looks better. Though my teeth are hurting, just looking at all the icing!

mrlistersgelfbride · 28/11/2025 19:13

Not my taste but they look similar. One in box looks nicer.

Bikergran · 28/11/2025 19:17

Is the first picture from the bakery you actually got the cake from, or did you give it to them as an idea? It's not exactly right, but I don't think it's worth arguing about, just don't use them again.

Createausername1970 · 28/11/2025 19:25

It's similar, but the one in the original was definitely more heart-shapped and the green icing is too dark, it was better on the original.

However, OP, is there a disclaimer to say that no two cakes will be identical? It looks handmade as opposed to off a production line with expensive machinery to ensure each item is identical.

So although the one you received isn't quite as nice as the original picture (in my opinion) I don't think I would be complaining. It's the downside of internet ordering.

At some point during the order process, did you specify that those exact colours were very important to you? Did you refer to them as very muted or very pale/pastel?
