School invoicing for books however I am not able to invoice for school uniform damage

My daughters primary school are invoicing us for 2 damaged book due to water damaged, from a water bottle we are required to provide for our child. I am not disputing these charges however I find it a double standard when my daughter comes home nearly everyday covered in paint that wont wash out of her white shirts and I am not able to invoice for that damage when it is incurring under the same circumstances

I always make sure water bottles are carried separate from books & files, by buying a rucksack with a side pocket water carrier.

How old is your DD?
Does school not provide overalls / encourage you to provide one?

Smartiepants79 · 27/11/2025 18:59

How old is the child??
Do they not have aprons?
The water bottle is for your child’s benefit. Get one that doesn’t leak.

ShowerLimescale · 27/11/2025 19:01

Primary school uniform gets dirty - no one expects you to replace it because there are marks on it.
You may be required to carry a water bottle, but they are not supposed to leak. Most bags have an outside pocket for a bottle so that it doesn’t affect what’s in the bag. School funding is dreadful - they can’t afford to keep replacing books - assuming the books are damaged beyond usability it seems reasonable to expect them to be replaced by whoever damaged them.

UniversalTruth · 27/11/2025 19:04

Sorry but I agree. If they have to replace the book it's because it doesn't function anymore. School shirts function perfectly well with paint stains on.

MumChp · 27/11/2025 19:04

Not the same - UABU.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 27/11/2025 19:04

You can't read a book ruined by water or pass it on to 150 other kids over the years.

You can wear a shirt that's got a bit of paint staining on it until it's outgrown a few months later.

Ponderingwindow · 27/11/2025 19:09

School shirts with paint stains are perfectly functional. Just keep using them.

our school had a playground surface that stained every child’s trousers over and over again. I gave up scrubbing after the first week and so did the other parents. We all just sent them to school with stains. It was finally replaced the year dd moved up to secondary.

Maybe Keep one shirt for special occasions and don’t include it in the regular rotation.

Sorry, what now?! Getting school to reimburse for stained uniform? Are you quite mad?

Ablondiebutagoody · 27/11/2025 19:12

The common link here is your daughter. She should be more careful

Twinkylightsg · 27/11/2025 19:12

Get an A5 or A4 pocket holder and keep things in it.

Water bottles are evil. Bought so many and they all end up leaking one way or another.

PollyBell · 27/11/2025 19:28

Why is the school to blame when your child is the one getting paint on them?

HoppityBun · 27/11/2025 19:33

What’s unreasonable is that your daughter isn’t required to wear a smock or jacket to protect her clothes when painting

KilkennyCats · 27/11/2025 19:35

Your child is the one causing the damage to both the books and the uniform, op 😆😆😆
How do you get through the day?

Tutorpuzzle · 27/11/2025 20:01

It is not the school’s job to teach your daughter to look after possessions.

Try and do some parenting.

BreakfastClubBlues · 27/11/2025 20:03

Surely you don't begrudge a SCHOOL a few books?
Do you not want there to be books available for your child to read?

Your uniform argument is ridiculous.

freakingscared · 27/11/2025 20:04

When did this happen at home or in school ? If in school it’s up to them to pay , if at home tell them not to send any more books

ByKindOpalPoet · 27/11/2025 20:06

There’s a massive difference between a destroyed book and paint on a shirt.

Bambamhoohoo · 27/11/2025 20:09

Why would you connect her dirty uniform with the schools need to reimburse you?! What a cheapskate chippy argument

she’s damaged their property. They didn’t damage her property did they?

surely everyone knows you get rucksacks drink carriers on the outside

lizzyBennet08 · 27/11/2025 20:24

I've literally heard it all now.

Somersetbaker · 27/11/2025 20:24

I know it was a million years ago that i went to school, but we didn't need to have water bottles available at all times, much the same way that I can go to Tesco now without one and don't feel the need to carry an overpriced takeaway coffee with me when i walk around the town centre, especially when the coffee getting the free advertising is total shite.

Doggielovecharlotte · 27/11/2025 20:26

Sounds very petty and you are conflating unconnected issues

your child needs to wear an apron

Hydrated children work better

Eenameenadeeka · 27/11/2025 20:30

How is it the schools fault that your child is getting covered in paint? She's getting it on her clothes herself

To be fair a lot of schools don’t allow own bags; it has to be a school book bag.

I do find it mildly frustrating that black marker pens are given out but I know it can’t be helped really … I’ve just had to replace two jumpers as well. But schools aren’t flush.

Sirzy · 27/11/2025 20:32

If every parent took so little care of the books and then refused to pay for them schools would soon have no books!
