Christmas songs in violin lessons

My child asked her violin teacher to teach some Christmas songs e.g Jingle Bells in her lesson this morning and was told if she brings in the music she will teach it but doesn’t provide it as she doesn’t celebrate Christmas, I find this a bit off.

Why is it off? It’s a non issue.

FeliciaFancybottom · 26/11/2025 18:07

You find what a bit off exactly?

Octavia64 · 26/11/2025 18:07

Second hand Christmas violin music is about two quid on eBay. Just buy some.

VividLemonLeader · 26/11/2025 18:07

Why? Fair enough ti bring your own music for special requests

itsthetea · 26/11/2025 18:09

What’s off about it is that Christmas songs are a great way to encourage children to play and practise , to learn tunes and to learn by ear , and in a society that celebrates Christmas not being able to tap into that fountain of usefulness seems daft

Pieminsterpie · 26/11/2025 18:09

Because I think the teacher should provide the music, it will need to be arranged as the music we have is too difficult. The key it’s in has notes she hasn’t learned, we want it played to a backing track. I just assumed it was part of their job to be accommodating

Seriously, who needs music for Jingle Bells? How long has your daughter been playing, can't she pick it out by ear?

Pinkieandthebraintakeovertheworld · 26/11/2025 18:11

She didn’t say she won’t teach Christmas music. She just doesn’t own a library of Christmas music because she doesn’t celebrate Christmas. What grade/level is your kid and are there any songs in particular you want? Use the magic of mumsnet to help you find some good sheet music.

TheSmallAssassin · 26/11/2025 18:13

I do find it surprising how many people on here are coming across others who "don't celebrate Christmas" with xyz consequence, it almost never happens in real life.

It is standard practice in instrument lessons for teachers to ask you to buy books.

there are several books of carols for violin none of which will need arranging and some of which are open strings only. Happy to pm you.

some Christians do not do Christmas as they believe it has roots in a pagan festival and isn’t about Christ. She may have e those beliefs.

Pieminsterpie · 26/11/2025 18:13

She’s been playing a few months and can place her fingers down but her teacher said the music needs to be in D major as she hasn’t learned the notes for the sheet music so she expects me to find it and I think the teacher should be doing that

Pinkieandthebraintakeovertheworld · 26/11/2025 18:14

FiddleTime Christmas?

murasaki · 26/11/2025 18:15

It's not part of the teacher's planned lessons, so yes, you sort it out.

Also, it will sound horrific, early violin playing does.

Octavia64 · 26/11/2025 18:17

jingle bells in d major.

you’re welcome

Pinkieandthebraintakeovertheworld · 26/11/2025 18:17

Multiple carols in D major and also G major which she could probably cope with - she’d need to learn C natural.

Isittimeformynapyet · 26/11/2025 18:20

Not enough eye rolls for this.

Shhh! Just smile and clap at the end of the song or when the new violinist stops on what was supposed to be the tonic…

Denim4ever · 26/11/2025 18:26

Is this a private teacher? If so not great that they aren't prepped for seasonal music. Also, if these are lessons separate from local authority/school teaching they will probably need to realise they need to cater for the customer

You need to be providing the materials for your daughter, including sheet music. You can find most carols on Google free of charge anyway as they're no longer in copyright! A little bit of work and you won't have to pay a penny.

I pity your poor child when she grows up if this is your attitude in life generally. You are embarrassing yourself and your child.

NemesisInferior · 26/11/2025 18:52

So you want this teacher to source/ arrange music she doesn't normally have, presumably in her own time and at her own cost so your kid can play Jingle Bells?
