DS is in Year 1 of university. He's very sporty (played top level football and rugby at school) and has worked as a coach for his old team where he got excellent references, but having moved 100 miles, he obviously needed a new job.
In mid October he contacted Little Kickers and was asked to spend a full Sunday morning coaching the kids. There were 4 separate sessions during which he coached the kids (to the extent you can with 4 year olds), he interacted with them, and also their parents. All went well and he was incredibly positive about it. He was doing the work and not observing or helping out while someone else did the main work.
He was expecting to work the following Sunday, but his contact stalled him for a couple of weeks, and eventually reverted after being chased to say that "Sorry we're not taking you on and (when asked), no you won't be paid for the half day as it was a trial."
It's a learning experience for DS, but it sounds as though they are using a succession of (very able) students as cheap labour under the pretence of having a trial. My question to Mumsnetters is whether you or your DCs have had any similar issues. I am minded to raise this with their head office, but would be good to know if my DS' experience is unfortunate and isolated, or more widespread.
Thanks in advance. And my Q is AIBU to think that they are exploiting young people?
