Private nursery or school nursery? SEN needs

Saddler89 · 26/11/2025 06:52

My son attends private nursery 3 mornings a week, he has just turned 3 and has speech and language needs - we are seeing a private speech and language therapist weekly, we are also struggling with potty training.

He does speak but is behind his peers with speech and communication which affects his understanding. A place has come up full time at school nursery where his sister attends - we aren’t really too happy with his new room at current nursery but are worried if school nursery won’t be able to manage his needs - or does being at a school help with getting SEN support he needs?

Does anyone have any words of wisdom or own experiences of this move?

Look, all you'll get is a million anecdotes about different nurseries that posters' kids, none of whom are your kid, attended. There is no one answer to this. It's about your specific child and the specific settings you are looking at.

Can he try a taster day in the proposed new nursery? See what he and they make of it?

it not about private vs state, it’s about the specific nursery he attends vs the exact state nursery you would be moving him into and nobody here knows what these two settings are like.

If he’s going to go to state school in the future and you think he might need an ECHP get him in a state nursery so they can start the ball rolling / gather info etc.

What are your intentions about school in the future? If he goes to the nursery linked to the school you hope he gets to attend the staff will already know him and his needs and even if he needs an EHCP and it's not in place, staff will know what his needs are and continue to push for that.

That's my view too.

If he's going to State school I'd get him in the system asap so there's support (or at least a paper trail of supposed support) by the time he starts school.

I also agree.
2 mine with special needs went to a school nursery and it was the best choice the school helped get Echp and get one of them into a special needs school because they could not meet his needs.
