I bought a Christmas pressie worth £300 from a well enough known, large company. The tracking had just stalled, nothing after dispatch and after about 11 days I contacted them which was really difficult because it was like trying to get in contact with the pope.

Anyway, they said that the courier had lost the parcel and issued me a refund. The next day the item appeared and the tracking was updated to say delivered. At this time (last Friday) my refund had not come through my bank. It came through last night. Please also note that on their Facebook page there were a lot of people complaining about missing orders.

My question is this. I had an idea to donate the £300 to a local food bank charity since I now have the product AND the money. The company will not miss it and the charity would be delighted.

Then the other half of my brain is saying...this is theft, contact the company ASAP and tell them the order was delivered. They will know anyway because tracking has been updated and they will come looking for you Robin Hood!

Help me out here.

YABU... That money is not yours or the food banks, do the right thing and give it back

YANBU.... The food bank will definitely benefit from it and the company will not cop it and send the police to your door.

Thanks in advance.

I once ordered (and paid for) 6 face flannels on Ebay

The 6 showed up,all good

Then the next day another 6 showed up

The following day another 6

Etc-this went on for about a week

I contacted them to say what had happened and got a snotty reply saying to send back the extra ones

I said I would but they had to send me as label as I didnt want to be out of pocket on a mistake I hadn't made (I emailed about 4/5 times)

They didnt bother-i never heard from them again (they live in the airing cupboard, waiting for the company to reclaim them which I dont think is going to happen anytime soon as they've been there since pre covid)

I'd just own up and take it from there

Tricky one. Your morals are in the right place imho. Can you put the money aside for say 6 months then donate if the corporate company doesn’t chase you on it?

If someone is thinking about committing theft then their morals are certainly not in the right place 🤦‍♀️

I had something similar with a well-known department store. I ordered a duvet worth about £100, which arrived - only I got an apology from them that it hadn't arrived and they sent another one. I tried to talk to someone on customer service but it was a point when this had been outsourced and the lady didn't understand me. So, I completed their returns form, filling in the free text section of the form with something like "you have sent me this twice and I only wanted one". They received the duvet back and automatically refunded me. At which point I gave up, and donated the equivalent of the money I'd saved to a couple of charities. I didn't feel guilty at all, I'm afraid!

I find it weird as well reading these comments about donating the free money to charity like you're not allowed to just keep it

I had a similar but not identical situation with a click and collect order, large company but much lower value order (about £40 I think). I collected the order, then received an e-mail saying my refund was being processed. The money reappeared in the bank a few days later. At that point, I contacted the company. It transpired that the person in the shop hadn’t scanned the parcel when I collected it, so it showed in their records as uncollected. I offered to pay them back, but they told me it was fine and that it was my “lucky day”. However, my conscience was clear at that point as I felt I had done everything I could to try to resolve the issue.

I had something similar happen a few years ago. Bought two pairs of trainers, about £300 each so not an insignificant amount of money, from an online store just before Christmas. They were shipped separately and neither turned up. The store blamed Evri, Evri just direct you back to the store.

A week later I got a message from Evri saying there were delays due to the time of year.

Another week went by and I got two separate emails from Evri (one for each pair) saying they'd been lost and the store would get in touch. Store sent a replacement for one pair, which arrived a month after my original order. They refunded the other as it was out of stock.

Middle of Feb I get a knock on the door, and it's the Evri man with both original pairs. I didn't contact them, they didn't contact me 🤷🏻‍♂️

Obviously you need to tell the company. But you know this, right?
