Annoyed by comment made by toddler class teacher

Hello,
So I take my nearly 2 yo sold to a toddler class, he’s been going since he was 8 months old, always had the same lady who runs the class.
We moved up a group today, ages 2-3, the lady got out those clapper hand toys, she was handing them out to all the children, she came over to my son and went to give him it, he flinched and looked scared to take it and didn’t want too. She said ‘I’m not going to hit you’ and laughed. I took it and he also didn’t like it from me, she then said ‘oh wonder what happens at home then’

I didn’t say anything back just laughed as didn’t expect it, I then felt pretty embarrassed she insinuated I hit my child and felt it was an unnecessary comment.
I went home thinking god those parents must think I now hit my child - which I do not and would not.
AIBU for feeling peed off about it?

Insane sense of humour for someone who runs a toddler class but nobody will have thought badly of you

blankcanvas3 · 24/11/2025 20:30

I do think this is rude. I would be mortified!

Enko · 25/11/2025 08:12

She was ruse. The other parents wont think bad of you more likely as mortified as you felt.

Everyone there will have thought the class leader was a dick.

OlympicProcrastinator · 10/01/2026 09:22

That was completely out of order. I wouldn’t have laughed that off I would have asked her to explain herself (I understand why you laughed it off in the moment). She was a twat OP.

Yes, when people make so-called jokes like this, make them explain. A simple "Oh can you explain what you mean by that?". It turns the embarrassment on to them. They usually end up back-tracking ("oh it was a joke"), to which you can say "well I don't find that funny". Or she would have to explain that she thinks your child is being hit at home (which she won't do).

She’s a dick.

When my baby was small I used to go to a weekly class with a small group of mums. One week, for various reasons the rest of them couldn’t come so I went on my own with my baby.

The class leader came up to me in front of everyone and said “where are all your mates this week, have they all gone for lunch without you and not told you?” Which I thought was a bloody awful thing to say to a new mum.
