To not do nit checks twice weekly?

School have sent out an email to say we should be checking the children’s hair thoroughly with a nit-comb twice a week. AIBU to think they’ve lost their minds?

We have one year group riddled with head lice. We know who it is, they don't comb their daughter's hair because they are teaching her responsibility and not making her look after her hair. Lack of action and consequence thereof. Except the consequences hurt us. We comb weekly here as a prevention.

Depends on the school, some schools are infested.
Neither of my DC ever had nits.
They've clean hair, so far managed to avoid them. We probably get a letter once a year to check.
Use teatree shampoo regularly.

It sounds like the OP’s school has an infestation they can’t shift so it needs extreme measures. My daughter had them once or twice in the whole of primary school. We treated and that was that. We plait her hair every morning so we would notice during that if there were nits or eggs. If there is not an issue twice weekly nit combing is excessive.

Mine have never had nits, I always blow dried their hair until they were about ten

I'm with you Op, I check my kids heads, by nape of neck behind ears etc daily. But I wouldn't do a full comb through with nit comb etc. unless I was told of a infestation or they were itchy etc.

We've never had nits here.

I don't think all the combing being discussed is necessary but I do brush and style ny children's hair every day and didn't notice nits until the itching started. I have a blonde child and brown-haired child and didn't see them in either.
