If you're the same age as dh, who has better skin?

Just that really...

If you moisterise and he doesn't, who has better skin?

I'm trapped in the cleanse/moisterise cycle - honestly don't feel confident going to work/socialise unless I have - while dh has a two minute shower each morning and washes his face with water. I worry dd will end up in the same cycle, while my ds gets to go through life never spending time or money on skincare.

So, a small anecdotal study: if you are the same age as your dh, and you moisturise while he doesn't, who has better skin?

YABU: I do (moisterising works!)
YANBU: He does (women have been unfairly targeted and brainwashed)

I don’t think you’re being unreasonable. However, my dh has ocd and hates any form of ‘grease’ so never moisturises at all and has terrible skin! So I think it must work a bit.

Zubble · 24/11/2025 11:29

Men's skin is naturally oilier than women's skin.

Upsideyourhead · 24/11/2025 11:29

Same - dh has better skin than me, which amazes me given how much time and money I've spent on my skin (over decades)

It’s primarily genetics.

It’s primarily genetics.

But do you think men have the genetics for better skin than women?

I’m older than DH, only use soap and moisturizer, I have far better skin than him. It’s genetics, from my Mum’s side. His is too.

Upsideyourhead · 24/11/2025 11:33

Another question I'm curious about, is whether some women wear makeup without moisterising first?

I don't know why this would feel so strange to me - probably because I've never done it

I am two years younger but skin is much better. Both face and body.

Belladog1 · 24/11/2025 11:38

I have a partner who is 5yrs older than me. I would say my skin facially is better than his, but the skin on his body / hands is far better. I have old woman hands and dry skin. My hands are very wrinkly. I took a photo the other day of a new ring to send him, and I immediately deleted it as they looked hideous. His hands are smooth and gorgeous and I'm very envious. He doesn't use anything on them at all.

I always moisturise before putting on makeup, and last thing at night before bed.

My late DH was nearly 10 years older than me so it's not really what you are asking. But when he died, aged 61, he had lovely skin. Even though he didnt use anything on his face other than soap and water and after shave.
He also had a very poor diet most of his life with very little fruit and gallons of coffee but no water.
So by rights his skin should have been rubbish but it wasn't. He did get lots of fresh air and walked a lot so I think that must have contributed.

Like you I've been doing the cleanse/ moisture thing since my early teens. I must have spent a small fortune on my face, even though I don't use high end products. My skin is definitely ok for my age but I dread to think what it would be like without the attention I give it. And no I would never wear make up without moisturising first.

LikeAHandleInTheWind · 24/11/2025 11:41

I think caring about sun exposure and always using sun block makes much more of a difference.

I have better facial skin and way, way better feet and nails than my DH - foot care is essential!

Womanofcustard · 24/11/2025 11:43

Men’s skin is thicker than women’s, generally. Men’s skin is more resistant to the environmental factors. They are generally less wrinkly!

HoskinsChoice · 24/11/2025 12:15

I'm well into my 50's and don't use any form of moisturiser or toner. The only exception is if I've been out in the sun. I am frequently told I don't look my age and that I have great skin. I'm a firm believer that the vast majority of people don't need moisturiser, we are just conditioned to think we do by the industry that profits from it.

DappledThings · 24/11/2025 12:19

Neither of us mosturise or wear make-up. I do have rosacea so you could say I look worse because of the redness and bumps etc but I don't take much notice of it and don't consider it worse than his unblemished skin. It's just what my face looks like. I think we both look fine and normal!

Holluschickie · 24/11/2025 12:20

Me. Because I use Tretinoin.

Lostsadandconfused · 24/11/2025 12:23

Men have a thicker dermis, it’s just biology.

sakura06 · 24/11/2025 12:27

I think a lot of our differences are use of SPF. I use sun cream religiously on my face in summer and he doesn’t. My skin is smoother and less wrinkled.

boringingoring · 24/11/2025 12:28

Agree with PP, it's largely genetic - I'm 51 with no wrinkles, my mother's 81 and the same. But we both have sun-damaged skin, whereas DH, who's a redhead, has stayed out of the sun all his life and has fresh and unblemished skin despite doing minimal skincare. The biggest (maybe only!) thing you can do to make a difference is to use SPF year-round.

Notyours1 · 24/11/2025 12:29

I have better skin and do not use much, only a bit of nivea in the morning and sometimes not everyday. DH moisturises twice a day but he also has two hot showers a day which to me dries out his skin. His mother has dry skin and so does one of our daughters so it is genetic too.

SunnyDolly · 24/11/2025 12:29

My skin is much better than DH but I’ve been a bit of a skincare nut since my mid 20’s. SPF every day too, pretty much year round. LED masks, facials etc. So it definitely is a lot but my skin is far better than DHs who I swear sometimes just rubs shampoo on his cheeks

LoveWine123 · 24/11/2025 12:32

MY DH is 6 years older (both over 40) and has better skin. It's genetic in my opinion, he does absolutely nothing and I have never seen him put on any sort of face cream.

Same here. The only time I wear moisturiser is before I apply make up, once a week when I go out out.

My 84yr old mother with lovely skin must have blssed me with her genes.

ShesTheAlbatross · 24/11/2025 12:34

He does - we’re both 34.

And he always gets ID’d when he buys alcohol. I never do (but I wouldn’t expect to at 34!).

MO0N · 24/11/2025 12:37

I have better skin than him by a country mile, because he works out doors!
The only product I use on my skin (apart from high SPF mineral sunscreen) is my own homemade moisturizer. This is half Nivea and half vegetable oil, I slap it on numerous times a day and keep my face as greasy as possible.
I think moisturizing works purely because of the emollient effect.
