Ultra-thin winter jacket for teen in wheelchair

Posting for traffic. My teen son has been in a wheelchair since around 6 months. I bought a parka that covers the tops of his legs, thinking that he would be cozy, but it turns out the arms are big and not flexible enough for him to use his wheelchair comfortably. I have very little experience with winter clothes and wheelchairs and was wondering what other parents would suggest. Is there such a thing as a thin winter jacket? Should I buy one or just get him used to being pushed around when we are out? Pushing him is often necessary, anyway, given the nature of his illness.

We live in a cold country (-12 right now).

How old is your DS @Laffydaffy ?

A 13 year old’s shape is likely to be very different to a 19 year old.

What has he used in previous winters that’s not suitable now, or have you relocated?

Have you thought about one of those heated gillets ? The ones that you can charge up? My friend has one and loves it

DryRobe have a specific DryRobe developed for wheelchair users - not sure if that would work? Called DryRobe Adapt

Depending on his age, the Dry Robe Adapt could be perfect - you can have the bottom part cinched tight or feet out, zip it off, and the sleeves tighten nicely. Through the outdoor swimming for people with disabilities group I'm in I know a few people who have them and they really rate them. They also have the advantage of being a brand other people wear, so more normal than disability specific stuff.

@Muchtoomuchtodo

DS is a tall, broad and solid 14 year-old. He has a provisional diagnosis of flu-triggered genetic ataxia - chorea and parkinson movements - which means he is too unstable to get outside much. Genetics will be finished this week.

I talked to him today about the wheel-chair cover, which he is not yet keen on. More for image reasons, I believe. This could change as winter progresses and he starts to freeze his nether regions. Before he became ill, he would wear snow/lined trousers and snow jackets outside, but these are just not practical in the wheel-chair.

The water-proof trousers is a good idea. We have a Decathlon near-by, so we can check out their out-door clothing this week.

Is the sheep-skin rug slippery at all?

Thanks again, everyone.

I use a sheepskin liner in my little boy's wheelchair, it's really good at helping him regulate his temperature, it keeps him warm in winter and cool in summer. It's not slippery at all and helps prevent him getting pressure areas (he's unable to weight shift for himself so is really prone to pressure areas)
