To be genuinely frightened of my Oodie!!!!

I have an Oodie that I bought last year. Our house is extremely chilly in winter and hard to heat, so it really serves a purpose.

When I took it off yesterday, by lifting it up and over my head, I got quite a powerful static shock. I wore it again today, thinking it was a strange, one off occurance, but when I lifted it up and over my hair, I could hear audible static. I got it off as quickly as I could once I heard that, but it felt like it might combust. I know I sound crazy, and in all my years on this earth, and having experienced many little static shocks over the years, something just doesn’t seem right.

Am I being totally unreasonable, or is my fear justified. I’m a little afraid to wear it, as the static and friction when removing it tonight seemed so intense.

What exactly are you afraid of? Worst case scenario you get a static shock, it's not going to kill you is it?

79Beastie · 23/11/2025 00:32

Stick it in the wash and don't tumble dry it. Hang it 🤙 n a cupboard door to dry

I know it sounds nuts, and I wouldn’t really have understood if I hadn’t just experienced it, but the static from it was like nothing I’ve ever heard.

I never tumble dry it, so don’t really know what has caused this. If I re-wash it, will it fix the issue?

I have one, and he shock I got from it was from I hung it up in my bathroom and a massive spider decided to live in it.

Ttmmuuaa · 23/11/2025 00:37

Wash with fabric conditioner I’d say. Sorts out static on synthetics IME.

BuffetTheDietSlayer · 23/11/2025 00:39

You’re more likely to be murdered in your home at night, than suffering any harm from a bit of static.

Lilyhatesjaz · 23/11/2025 00:43

Just don't wear it to get petrol and you will be fine.

InterestedDad37 · 23/11/2025 01:15

Rub a balloon on it 🎈⚡

Rub a dryer sheet on the inside. It will stop the static cling and make your Oodie smell nice.

Herbisaurous · 23/11/2025 03:28

Wash it with an overly generous amount of fabric conditioner

wombat1a · 23/11/2025 03:49

The static will likely be generated by it rubbing against what you are wearing underneath it. Change the fabric type for what you are wearing beneath it and see what happens (eg to cotton).

Growing up the 80s, I was convinced spontaneous combustion would be a bigger thing in my life than it has been. It has been too quiet for too long on spontaneous combustion, I think you’re likely to be starting a new generation of fear when reports are all that is left of you is a smouldering part of slippers. ⚡️

BlueEyedBogWitch · 23/11/2025 03:55

Couple of crocodile clips and a small generator, and that’s you off grid. Result.

springintoaction2 · 23/11/2025 05:42

😅

Some great answers on here OP

I'm wearing my Oodie right now and have never experienced the static of which you speak...Mine has unicorns on, so maybe that is the magic protection you need.

I remember as a child putting my head under the blankets and wafting my Holly Hobbie nightie to see the sparks from the static! I used to think it was a fun game!

Tomatocutwithazigzagedge · 23/11/2025 05:57

Rub it with a metal coathanger before you put it on.

Don't do this in the garden during a storm.

FuzzyPuffling · 23/11/2025 08:02

I have the Matalan cheapy version ( more than adequate, I might add) and have never had any electricity from it.
Jealous.

I was wondering if it is possessed and the thread should move to the woo board

Chiefangel · 23/11/2025 08:11

Brush it down with a wire hanger to get rid of the static.
