I bought an item on Vinted that I intended to give as a gift. The item was listed as brand new with tags.

When it arrived, it was sealed up, looked brand new and all seemed to be in order. It had one of those circle stickers on to seal it at the bottom (I don’t know how else to describe it, one of those circular sellotape things). I marked it as all okay and got on with it. It didn't occur to me that anything was wrong, because it looked brand new from the outside.

I went to wrap the gift today and on taking a much closer look, the sellotape had obviously been replaced. It was one piece stuck on top of another. I opened it up and lo and behold, the board game has been ripped and damaged. I can't gift it now, but I'm shit out of luck as I marked it as okay a couple of weeks ago, believing it was genuinely brand new.

I have now left a bad review and messaged to ask the seller if she would buy it back, as I feel this has obviously been done in bad faith. She's messaged a load of abuse back, basically saying it's my own fault for not noticing this before, but she had done it really, really well. It was put nearly exactly on top, I only noticed because it just happened to catch my eye as a bit oddly shaped.

It's only a fiver so in the grand scheme of things it doesn't matter, but why do people feel the need to do this? It's not like I can donate the game or anything now as it's ruined, so it's got to go in the bin. I'm gutted because the recipient would have loved it, too.

Let it go and next time check before you accept the item.

The thing is it looked absolutely perfect from the outside. The only reason I could tell was because the light caught the sellotape funny as I went to wrap it. Like that’s just a pure intent to deceive at that point!

Yanbu to be annoyed but as it's only £5, I'd also let it go and just be really careful with checking Vinted stuff in future.

Can you report the seller for sending the abusive message though? I've only ever had positive interactions on there. Even when one buyer was being quite unreasonable (and Vinted sided with me), she was at least civil and ended up leaving me positive feedback.

It’s a hard lesson to learn that items need a thorough check before accepting that everything’s ok. At least it was only a cheap item. Block the seller if you haven’t already.

I've edited my review to say she's been abusive, and reported and blocked her.

I just feel sorry for her kids to be honest.

Some people are just dishonest and crappy. Take it as lesson to learn from and in future be sure to check the goods before you okay it.

PracticalPixie · 22/11/2025 14:39

She does sound horrible, but there are many horrible people around unfortunately! Hopefully people will read your feedback before buying anything from her

I bought a beautiful dress from vinted. Stated size 14.
When it arrived it was about a size 10. The lining was stiff from God knows what and there was damage to it.
Told seller and she was quite suprised !
Chalked it down to experience and chucked it in bin.

BriefEncountersOfTheThirdKind · 22/11/2025 15:35

She being unreasonable to sell it like that but she's right that you should have checked more closer tbh

I know what you mean, it’s frustrating and actually a bit upsetting to get ripped off like this.

I’ve had similar then been abused verbally when I asked for returns - one seller said I was a sad case for wanting to return something that was broken- she suggested I glue it 😟

It honestly makes me wonder how some folk sleep at night but agree that it’s not worth the headspace - write it off and in future check everything thoroughly before you mark as being ok.

I bought my daughter a pair of Memory foam trainers (she has mobility issues and needs the padding) and they arrived with no insoles whatsoever!

I messaged to tell the seller and she had an absolute fit suggesting I had taken them out and was trying to scam her! People are just vile sometimes.

When she’s gone to the lengths she has to make it look brand new, what am I to do?
