Knocking on the back door at 9.30pm

I live alone in a terraced house. Back yard rather than garden, with a back lane.

Someone just knocked, twice, at my back door. Dark in the back lane. It's a minute walk round to the front, where I MIGHT have answered (might not now it's dark tho). Creepy as fuck.

Would you have answered the door? I found it very odd that someone would go to the back door (even in daytime). There's no reason to. My car isn't there. My bins aren't out. I have nothing in the lane itself.

I ignored it. After they'd gone I checked the doors were locked (they were).

Back door? I'd have been freaked out. Buy a bolt for the back gate and get it fitted asap.

Front door, I have previously put on the lights, and had a conversation through the window in the front room. Has happened twice - once a taxi - wrong house, and once a food delivery - again, wrong house. Both put midnight.

Nope, no way and I'd have a security camera there if down a dark alleyway. Also, if possible, I'd pay out to have a gate either end of the lane to protect all the properties!

We had that once. Young guy with his face up the window telling me to open the door. I had 2 very large dogs at that point, both quite protective of me. I opened the door. Never seen anyone move so fast, he was back over the gate before I even managed to threaten him with police. My younger dog chased him out of the alley.

Years ago some strange man let themselves into our garden and appeared at the open french windows in the lounge where both mum and I were sitting. Our dog went up to him, wagging tail and licked his hand. Useless!!

Glitchymn1 · 23/11/2025 07:56

I probably would, because the not knowing would be worse and I’d find it hard to sleep, worry it might happen again, be jumpy etc. I’d look out the window first.

If you had a window that side, I would have answered through it or call through the door. I'd rather show there's someone in the house.

You're a bit less likely to be burgled if you let them know the place is occupied. Also sounding really pissed off helps. 'Oh for fuck's sake what is it now?' is good ~ also, physiologically, you can't be fearful and angry at the same time.

Grow up.

Squirrel60 · 24/11/2025 17:43

OMG, I'm so sorry that happened to you.

I'd have NOT answered, and I'd keep a diary of the dates, times, how it makes you feel etc. ''just in case''

I'd have freaked out.

Grow up.

If anal sex is not a grown up subject, what is 😂

I used to have a hockey stick for occasions like this...
I would have pretended to talk to a man. But not opened the door.

BillieWiper · 24/11/2025 18:58

My back door only leads to other people's back door but not the street iyswim.

Do your neighbours sometimes knock that late? One of them was locked out or something?

For me it would only ever be the cats.

But I would answer the front door tentatively out of pure curiosity. It is nearly always just a delivery for someone else.

I used to knock on doors up to 9pm for my work. But I wouldn't go to the back. I never got anyone seeming angry but I guess they just ignore it if they are scared/pissed off.

I had someone banging on my back door many years ago. When I looked through the window, he shouted that someone was after him and pleaded to be let in.

He was just wearing jogging bottoms and had no shoes on. So, I let him in.

Turned out he had been shot in the bottom. I called the police and wrapped him in a duvet. That resulted in armed police being in my house which was quite a sight.

Everyone I spoke to later thought it was absolute madness to let a stranger like that into my house when it was just me and my young child asleep upstairs.

Why did I do it? It was just instinct to help him. I'm not sure whether I would do it again. But at the time, I thought if I didn't help him, what would have become of him and I didn't want that on my conscious.

I don’t mean to laugh but shot in the bum!!

A former colleague was once burgled while he was at work. He came home to find his slippers by the broken patio door where his dog had brought them to welcome the burglar!
