My dad used to do this.

’Dad, I’m just going to -‘
‘school.’
’the car. I’ll pop back in the house in a minute.’

My brother had inherited this annoying as fuck trait.
’well, I was going to’
’go to bed’
’watch a film but …’

Colleague at work did it to me three times today. (I’ve recently lost five stone.)
’Are you going to stick to your diet over Christmas?’
’well, I’ll probably -‘
’come off it’
’just have Christmas Day off.’

AIBU in finding it SO FUCKING ANNOYING!

I had an aunt who used to this. She never one accurately predicted what I was about to say next! I agree it's very annoying.

JonSnowedUnder · 21/11/2025 18:17

So annoying, my mother does this but often to be negative about something I'm doing or buying. I mentioned a local Christmas event and was just about to say I'd bought tickets when she interrupted to 'agree' it looked rubbish.

Tillow4ever · 21/11/2025 18:20

I don’t I know anyone that does this! But it sounds annoying!

youalright · 21/11/2025 18:45

I do this i get irrationally annoyed when people take to long to get out a sentence

Idontknowwhy15 · 21/11/2025 18:47

I do this. It’s apparently because I have ADHD. I’m working on it 😳

DancingOctopus · 21/11/2025 18:48

Yes, I agree. I often have to think whilst speaking and I can get annoyed when people try to jump in and finish my sentences for me.
However, a good friend used to do this and I saw it as a sign of affection. Maybe I am getting bad tempered in my old age.

My best friend did it a lot too. I thought about finding it annoying because, like you, she was very rarely actually correct. However on reflection it did show that she was actively listening and participating in my (usually mundane) remarks.

She died very suddenly last year and I would give anything to have her back.

hollyblueivy · 21/11/2025 18:50

Oh my gosh I am compulsive at doing this and I know how annoying it is. I need to work harder to stop myself.

InLoveWithAI · 21/11/2025 18:50

It's often neurodivergent people who do this.

Maybe you shouldn't take so long saying your sentence.

DontbesorrybeGiles · 21/11/2025 18:50

I have ADHD and I do this. I feel bad about it and I am trying to stop doing it.

AutumnClouds · 21/11/2025 18:52

Sorry! I try not to…

Some people do talk really slowly though and you do know what their entire thought is about five seconds before they finish verbalising it when they could say it much more efficiently and that’s annoying too.

soupyspoon · 21/11/2025 18:52

My OH does this and I hate it, its always wrong because he cant read situations or people and has no idea what im going to say, then I say 'wait and let me finish' and he just keeps doing it and talking over me.

Furious

HarbourClankCat · 21/11/2025 18:52

I have someone I deal with at work that does this. Initially I thought it was just me as she doesn’t do it with people senior to me. Now I see she does it to a lot of people either at the same level or junior.

Not tried to delve into the psychology really but it is infuriating.

Upthenorth · 21/11/2025 18:54

I try not to but it’s the slow speech that gets me… I didn’t realise it’s possibly a ND trait but not a great shock to me.

PolyVagalNerve · 21/11/2025 18:54

A common trait in ADHD

TheRolyPolyByrd · 21/11/2025 18:57

I definitely don't have ADHD but I occasionally do it just to get them to hurry the f up. Usually they push me to it with a monologue which could have been compressed into one sentence. I suspect I subconsciously do it to show them that the monologue was a waste of everyone's time. It never works.

GloopityGlupp · 21/11/2025 18:57

My mum does this. It is so annoying. What is worse, I have noticed that I have started doing it too. I'm mortified as it's an awful habit.

I do actively stop myself, but it's tough.

Wordsmithery · 21/11/2025 18:58

Similarly, I get irate when people say 'Like you said, (grass is blue, or whatever)' when I've said nothing of the sort. It happens surprisingly often so I wonder if I'm not as articulate as I like to think.

CatHairEveryWhereNow · 21/11/2025 18:59

I have family who do this - when it starts to irriate me I find out The Two Ronnies sketches that do this and then usually irriates me less going forward.

user1471453601 · 21/11/2025 19:00

I had a very dear friend who took this type of behaviour to a whole new level. Conversations would go something like this.

Her "What did you think when x said/did y? Well I knew you'd say they were being ridiculous. I said as much to z. I said, well you are such a good judge of character that's one on the things I love about you".

me, silent.

I used to tell her it was so restful going out with her as kept up both sides of the conversation, so I could just relax.

her idiosyncrasies amused me a lot more than they angered me.

Ahwig · 21/11/2025 19:01

I had 2 members of staff who did a similar thing. But a sort of twist on it as they both repeated the last 2 words anyone said. “ I’m just nipping out to tescos” “ to Tesco’s “ . “ Did anyone watch Eadtenders last night?” “ last night “. The staff weren’t connected in any way they just happened to be 2 people who had the same VERY annoying trait.

Op is probably speaking at a normal speed. I have adhd myself and sometimes get told I speak too fast. My close friend has adhd and constantly interrupts me, it makes it very hard for myself to keep on track.

I love her to bits and laugh it off must of the time but I can’t lie, having any type of important or serious conversation with her is made so so much more difficult because it’s literally every other sentence she tries to finish and then when she’s wrong she tries to explain why she thought I was about to say the thing she assumed.

PracticalPixie · 21/11/2025 19:01

Yes, it's not a great habit tbh. But sometimes people are quite slow to get their words out which can be equally annoying! Obviously not annoying if English isn't someone's first language or they have to speak slowly for another reason.

Raindropsonaprilflowers · 21/11/2025 19:01

Idontknowwhy15 · 21/11/2025 18:47

Same. If it’s any consolation OP, I know that it’s annoying to other people and I hate that I do this too. It’s one of the (many) reasons I try not to socialise anymore.

PennywisePoundFoolish · 21/11/2025 19:02

My husband does this a lot. What makes it more infuriating is he monologues for ages, and cannot bear anyone trying to cut in! Even when he's gone massively off-track and is merrily talking absolute bollocks because of assumptions he's made.

He's probably ND as am I. I've suggested we only communicate by text, but he hates texting.
