To think this is not allowed? Construction noise

NC’d for this as I also posted in local facebook groups for opinions and to see if others have the same issue or if I’m just being noise sensitive.

I live in a new build (and I’m not looking for a debate on new builds). When we moved here we knew there would be construction noise and we were fine with that. And we still are….during the day.

Early mornings however! Apparently work is allowed to start at 7am on weekdays, which I still think is very early. But in reality that seems to mean the noise starts before 6:30. All the builders sit queuing down our road and others with their engines on, sometimes music playing. If you’re trying to get back to sleep it’s impossible. Then once all the vans are in the material deliveries start around 6:45, this is actually louder than the construction as the lorries and material on them are so noisy.

I’m having problems sleeping at the moment and it’s just making me so mad. Awoken at 6:30 this morning and couldn’t get back to sleep, now listening to all the deliveries.

Do we have any grounds for complaint - are there any rules or laws on construction and associated noises this early every single fucking day?

There would be conditions on the planning consent for the development. If they are working on site outside the hours agreed you can complain to the council. Vans waiting to come in may not be covered though.

You need to look at your council website but normally it’s 8am. I have to say though at this time of year they need to get the hours in esp given weather and day light hours restrictions. However the rules are rules so you can complain if you want.

7am is hardly early. It’s a pretty normal time to get up I should have thought.

Eenameenadeeka · 21/11/2025 09:01

Where I live they are are allowed to make noise from 7.30 am to 6pm, and allowed to set up (quietly) from 6.30. Noise applies to things like power tools, not their engines running, or radios. We had our house built so been in from new- and had neighbors building beside us while we had a newborn which was not the best but all part of it really. Eventually it will be all built around you and you'll forget all about it :)

6.30 get ups? Maybe some people do with long commutes or very small kids and some elderly people too seem to do this - but I for one don’t get up before 8am -
and yes OP I feel your pain - we had a very big house just over the road that had a lot of work being done for 18 months and the lorry’s and noise started around 7.20 am in the week

Report to the site manager. They should remind contractors to be considerate so should stop radio and idling but probably not deliveries.

Idling in a stationary vehicle is actually a traffic offence so if it continues report to the police using the online report for your local force.

7am is early if it’s earlier than you need to be up! And I still think early for construction noise. Nothing wrong with a bit of peace first thing in the morning.

Thanks for your help everyone, it hadn’t even crossed my mind to speak to the site manager. We met him before moving in (he spoke us through the house and how snagging works) and was really lovely. We’ll go looking after work today for his number at the entrance of the site and fingers crossed we get lucky.

Now it’s a bit later and I’ve had a coffee I’m feeling a bit more generous. I’m sure the workers don’t realise how loud they are/that they can be heard from inside the houses. They’ve probably been in the routine of it long before we and others moved in last year and they just haven’t given it any thought.

I would do just that. He will
speak to his team and can put some measures in place to be more considerate. He will not want to rub you or any residents up the wrong way it only makes his life more difficult too. It won’t be perfect - delivery drivers WILL rock up and do whatever they need to to offload and move on to next place ASAP so they will be noisy and it is the foreman’s or appointed traffic managers job to manage them. I feel for you! I work in this trade. And right now I’m working from home with people drilling concrete on the other side of my wall and it’s been going on for weeks with little I can do.

Amazon sell a trial pack of a mix of earplugs so you can test a few without having to buy a big packet of one type. This is how I found the ones I use all the time now.

Before finding 'the perfect' earplugs for me, I had many problems with other types. I even had to go to hospital one time to get a bit of a silicone earplug removed because it had broken off and I couldn't get it out!

I don't think you are bu. We had a utility company make base at the end of our road whilst doing work and they'd start turning up at 6.30 shouting at each other and generally banging around getting ready. I cursed but didn't say anything as it was only temporary but one Saturday a huge flat bed lorry turned up at 7am and left his engine running for 45 mins (at which point out I went out and complained then also complained to the utility company. It was so unnecessary (he even said he just didn't think to turn it off......)
