Sorry not aibu but posting for traffic. This Heater is dangerously hot, any idea how we can cool it down ? Turning it off doesn’t work as it blasts heat all day. I’ve got toddlers here and they’re going to get burnt.
It’s on the lowest setting, I can’t believe how hot it is.

That looks old to the point of dangerous. When were they last serviced? Doesn't it have a wall off switch?

Also check the electrical control panel and see if there is a circuit switch for the storage heaters.

Yes it has a wall switch which we’ve turned off. The same thing happened to another one yesterday that wasn’t accessible to the kids, it didn’t cool down until late last night ! No idea when they were last serviced, I posted a couple of days ago about the mould in this place, it’s not fit to house people but that’s another story I’m just worried how how the heaters get !

I used to have storage heaters in a house I lived in. They did get really hot in the mornings, then it was much cooler in the evenings. They were a pain.

WittyJadeStork · 21/11/2025 07:06

It probably needs servicing. They do blast heat until the bricks cool down

Lennonjingles · 21/11/2025 07:07

Storage heaters work through the night, as it’s extremely cold nighttime, it’s working at maximum and will stay hot throughout the day, if you’ve turned thermostat down, it shouldn’t be so hot tomorrow, agree has it been serviced/checked lately, maybe the thermostat is broken. I would put something in front of it, to stop children going near it, or cover it.

That looks like the storage heaters we used to have, the two options were off or on, and on was insanely hot. I'd be contacting the landlord to tell him you're concerned about whether it's working properly - it may spur them into doing a service or even an upgrade to a more modern storage heater (some areas even offer grants to help with installation costs). In the meantime, can you get hold of something to sit around it to block it from being touched but where air still circulates - fire guard or even a fold out airer with something (washing?) on it? Our heaters like that were from the 1980s and all had died by about 3 or 4 years ago, some much earlier.

Is this it?

It does look like you have the dial on the right set very hot so it is storing lots of heat overnight

This place is being knocked down soon as the landlords have got planning. We’re only here temporarily until we can move into our new house. I just can’t believe how how they are, it doesn’t seem safe

I would be looking at your meter to see if it a RTS - radio teleswitch as the gas and leccy companies were making lots of noise about turning that off last year.

However I presume the fact they're still working means you're on economy 7 or 10 tariff or what not for storage heaters and not using a teleswitch.

They do get red hot. Especially as it's been so cold in the morning
I'd get a fireguard round them and ask landlord to get them serviced or show when they were last serviced as you think they're not working correctly

We have turned it all down and off now so hopefully tomorrow they will be cold again. We didn’t touch the dials just turned them on at the switch

It might be a mechanical timer, different from RTS. It's basically a little dial clock which sits next to the meter, and switches rates from day to night.

Should be wired into fused socket, remove fuse & thats it. Should be wired into fused socket, remove fuse & that’s it, it won’t turn on again. If you just turn off at socket & it still works then the switch is faulty & needs replacement.

Or she could switch it off with the switch at the wall, like a normal person.

We used to have them at work
you’ve got it set to take in the max heat and put out the minimum

these will take about 3 days to settle if you adjust them
even though you turn it off it will still be discharging stored heat

RedTagAlan · 21/11/2025 07:49

If you do an image search on google (control panel photo) you should be able to find an instruction manual.

RedTagAlan · 21/11/2025 08:05

"Creda 79151 storage heater instructions"

If you search that you will get a manual.
