What's the script with schools looking like maximum security prisons?

Is there some well-connected fence contractor who's hobbled Ofsted into telling schools they must spend money on Alcatraz makeovers while they can't afford pens or textbooks? It's all a bit OTT isn't it?

Dunblane was the main instigator of the fencing, especially in Scottish schools. The machete attack at St Luke's a few months later brought the security to more english schools as well.

There was a horrible incident in a secondary school in Middlesbrough maybe around 28-30 years ago too

when the dreadful incident happened, of the car in Wimbledon driving through the fence and killing those two young girls, I couldn’t help but think it may have been less devastating if there’d v been a wall or decent metal fence around that school garden. From all the photos it looked like a flimsy wooden garden fence. I think protection round schools is a good idea
