Regarding item in will

My grandmother has left me one of her rings. Due to family estrangement I didnt go to the funeral.
I have been asked if someone could pick up the ring for me.
I dont really have anyone to pick it up. I live in another country.
Is it unreasonable to ask it be sent in a special way (royal mail special delivery or something? Im not sure will need to look into it.) I would pay for postage.

It is too much to expect you to go to another country to collect an inheritance. I would have thought it could be securely wrapped and sent by special recorded delivery or similar and as you mentioned, you would cover the cost of that. If the executor/s are using a solicitor then s/he would do this if the executor/s of the will cannot or do not want to take responsibility for this.

Littletreefrog · 20/11/2025 17:48

Its not unreasonable for you to ask them to send it to you at your cost. If they absolutely refuse to post it you could arrange for a courier to pick it up for you. That's sending someone to pick it up as per their request.

Andromed1 · 20/11/2025 17:48

The executor ought to be arranging this kind of thing. Just ask them to send it tracked delivery and to let you know the tracking details. If they refuse, they aren't doing their job.

SoScarletItWas · 20/11/2025 17:49

Royal Mail exclude jewellery from all their services, including tracked. If it gets lost they will not pay out.

It’s not unreasonable to ask for it to be ent but do not use Royal Mail.

Edit to add: you can if you use Special Delivery Guaranteed. I know other levels exclude jewellery as I got caught out once!

JellyTotsAreYum · 20/11/2025 17:59

Dont know what country you are in, but some countries place restrictions on jewellery with precious metals and/or gemstones. So you will have to check that out. Also many couriers won't pay out for lost or damaged jewellery. In the end you may have to sign something to say you agreee that it's sent at your own risk and there is no comeback on the estate/executor if it doesn't reach you.

Mumblechum0 · 20/11/2025 18:03

Normally the cost of shipping specific bequests is covered by the estate, but as there's been an estrangement it would be best to make it easy for the execs by just asking them to post it recorded delivery or similar, and paying the postage and packaging costs.

Chickencuddle · 20/11/2025 18:49

Thanks everyone. Thinking about it i don't want him to have our address. Not sure what to do now.

You might consider using a courier service

MissMoneyFairy · 20/11/2025 19:30

Royal mail, special delivery guaranteed says you can send jewellery and it's tracked, insured and you can claim compensation. If you go on their website you can arrange collection from the relative to an address of your choice, it doesn't have to be your home address, maybe a friend, hotel, po box?

MummyMags3 · 20/11/2025 20:02

Could it be sent by the deceased’s solicitor to your solicitor for you to collect and sign necessary paperwork?

Soontobe60 · 20/11/2025 20:14

What a shame yiu couldn’t attend your grandmother’s funeral, how long before she did]ed did you see her?
if you’re not willing to give the executor your address to send the ring, and you’re not willing to collect it, then it’s almost impossible for them to do anything else.

Untrue, it can be sent to another safe address for op to collect from. Why they are estranged is none of our business.
