Friend and dog walking

totallytotallytoal · 20/11/2025 13:40

My friend has a dog. I don't have a dog, never had and never will.

She asks me a lot if I want to go for a dog walk with her, This could be anything from a 30min to a 2 hour walk. She does indicate in advance where we are going, which then tells me how long it will be.

Does anyone else's friends ask them to go for dog walks, if they don't have a dog but the friend does, ? Is this an odd thing to do or perfectly normal ?

Are you worried the dog is going to be listening to all the gossip?

RoseAlone · 20/11/2025 14:20

Perfectly normal. Most people enjoy it whether they have a dog or not, it's very therapeutic

sonjadog · 20/11/2025 14:20

It's just asking if you would like to go for a walk. Which is a perfectly normal thing to do. If you don't want to go for a walk, say no.

HelloCharming · 20/11/2025 14:23

I'm now wondering which of my non dog owning friends I've bemused by asking them if they want to come for a walk with me and the dog...

It's also the best bit of visiting people who have dogs, getting to walk with their dogs...

IwishIcouldconfess · 20/11/2025 14:24

i can't be the only one sat here thinking what the @@@@ am I missing?

toomanydicksonthedancefloor1 · 20/11/2025 14:29

Sounds perfectly normal to me too. I don't have a dog and in fact I dislike dogs, but I would enjoy the time to chat with my friend and the actual walk so would enjoy it overall.

FlyingApple · 20/11/2025 14:30

Yeah, why not? You get to go on a lovely walk with a friend. I don't think it's really about the dog.

LakieLady · 20/11/2025 14:33

I quite often go for a walk with a friend and her dog, and occasionally with my SIL and her dog.

If I'm going for a walk with someone who has a dog, it seems silly not to bring the dog too.

And they'd pass it on! Dogs are shite at keeping secrets.

themerchentofvenus · 20/11/2025 14:37

@totallytotallytoal well it's not like the dog is going to have a conversation with her!!

ContinuewithGoogle · 20/11/2025 14:38

so many people go on a walk together.

Some of these people have a dog, some have a buggy with a baby in it.
what is the exact question?

mickandrorty · 20/11/2025 14:39

I don't think your friend is the odd one 😂they are asking you if you want to go for a walk and there happens to be a dog there. Friends go for walks together all the time!

CautiousLurker2 · 20/11/2025 14:58

I have dogs and lots of unfettered friends - it’s actually they who ask whether they can join me walking them 🤷🏻‍♀️ I’d rather snuggle into the sofa with a cappuccino and chat!

Myoldbear · 20/11/2025 15:01

My friend with a dog has someone to walk with every day of the week.
I'm Wednesday.

ForZanyAquaViewer · 20/11/2025 15:05

She’s asking you to go for a walk. Either you fancy it or you don’t. What’s the issue?

This tickled me for some reason!

Quite possibly the weirdest question I have seen on here. It's a bit like 'friends asked me to go for a coffee with her but I don't normally drink coffee!' Or 'friend asked me to go to the pub with her is this normal?!'

i was thinking this!!

Why oh why, is it weird to go for a walk, and presumably a nice catch up chat, with a friend who just happens to have a dog as well? Confused

Nowt as queer as folk, as we say.

DarkEyedSailor · 20/11/2025 15:34

Yes it's very normal.

SusanChurchouse · 20/11/2025 15:39

I love doing this with friends. I have no interest in owning a dog but love getting out for a walk with one. Gives a bit of purpose and direction to a walk and usually involves a nice hot drink thanks to the abundance of dog friendly coffee places.

TheAlertLimeSnail · 20/11/2025 15:39

In of itself I think it's normal.

I would only say it's not normal (or rude) if she will only meet for dog walks i.e. pre-dog you would meet for lunch, coffee, etc but now she only wants to meet for dog walks.

CoralOP · 20/11/2025 15:42

You sound like my friend...I had a friend who declared she could no longer afford to go out for meals which we did a lot. No problem for me, I suggested she comes along on my scenic dog walks for a catch up instead, she just couldn't get her head around why we would do this. Fine by me, she no longer goes out for meals or anything else and is fed up with her life....whilst I am happy as a pig in shit with my dog walks.
Long story short, just go and get some fresh air, exercise and chat to your friend, there's nothing at all unusual about it!

goldenmagicbiscuittin · 20/11/2025 15:44

Asking you, a non dog owner, to go on a walk? I bet you've been walking your entire life and have never been so insulted. How VERY dare her!

BartholemewTheCat · 20/11/2025 15:46

What’s your issue with it, OP? Do you not like dogs? Do you think it impacts on the sort of conversations you might be having?

Radiatorvalves · 20/11/2025 15:48

I ask my doggie owning friends if I can go for a walk with them. I love dogs and they all think I should get one, but sadly it’s not practical. I’ve walked with maybe 5 friends and their different dogs over the past couple of months.
