How much do you have in savings?

You do not need to answer if you are not comfortable sharing obviously. But if you are comfortable, just wondering how much others have in savings? I feel like I am very behind in life! I live paycheck to paycheck so at the end of the month I have around £100 leftover. However DH and I have a shared savings account which we started around a year ago and we add money monthly. This account has £2,400. That is all I have. Is this really bad?
Edit: I am early/mid twenties.

By mid 20s I had about £15K in savings? But I'd worked since I was 16. From 18 I taught swimming so the pay was pretty good. Think I got about £25/30hr an hour so it added up quickly. Then by early 20s I had a full time job with a decent bonus (several thousand a year).

Now, 10 years on, it's closer to £75K in savings + house (own 80% of it at c.600K). But that's partly good luck (premium bonds) and family bereavement.

So, partly commitment to savings and working since I was young, a very unfortunate set of events, and then a win on Premium Bonds.

I’m 40 and have nothing. I live alone (adult DC has left home for uni) and live paycheck to paycheck. I can’t see it changing anytime soon. So well done to all you savers! 👌🏼

Statsquestion1 · 19/11/2025 18:44

Honestly…I have 65k in my main savings account that’s mine. Dh has 50ishk and we have joint savings of over 100k - this we will probably use to pay a chunk off the mortgage though. We are late 30’s. We save 2k per month excluding holiday saving. I am aware we are very lucky to be able to do that.

gruffaloaddict · 19/11/2025 19:20

I’m mid 30s and have £6k in savings. If I lost my job tomorrow I would struggle after 2 months but my job has good notice/redundancy periods so I’m not too worried, although I’m realistic that anything could happen. If an emergency I am lucky enough to have family would could potentially bail me out. My only debt is my mortgage though, no credit cards or things on finance, so I feel fairly ‘free’ in that respect. Once Christmas is out the way I will aim to transfer £100 a month - I could potentially do a little more here and there. We aren’t v good at making regular payments so would like to work on that!

Pennyroses · 19/11/2025 19:30

I didn't have any savings until a bereavement a couple of years ago and this has put me in a very good position in my late 30s and I've been able to pay my mortgage off. Before that I was working full time and still getting topped up with universal credit as I was earning minimum wage. I've managed to raise 3 children to almost adulthood on no savings at all so I really wouldn't worry about it at such a young age x

DeedlessIndeed · 19/11/2025 19:34

OP, look up the importance of compound interest. By starting now, you are doing your future self a massive favour. Building good financial awareness and saving habits now is the way to go.

When I was early 20s I was in a few K debt, so you are already in a much better place than many.

I would recommend that you build up your emergency fund (3-6 month salary). Then work to build up some medium term savings / a house deposit. Don't ignore investing, but realise it is for the long term. Personally, I'd avoid messing around with it until you have the above saved up and are focusing on retirement or LTS.

Ponderingwindow · 19/11/2025 19:39

I’m in my 50s and have United States college tuition imminent. The amount of cash I have in savings is more than I could have ever imagined in my 20s.

it takes time and dedication, but the best thing we ever did was move to an area with better housing prices.

WolfieMuma · 19/11/2025 19:48

That’s fine, for your age.

Gallusoldbesom · 19/12/2025 14:56

When I was your age zero was the answer so you’re doing a lot better than most! However I’m an old fart now and have six figures in the bank/invested. My 25 year old daughter has about £9k but not because she’s saved it, it’s been gifts/inheritance etc, the one sensible thing she has done is to park it in accounts she can’t get at as she knows she’d be tempted spend it! Keep going and think about putting it in a high interest account or somewhere like the Nationwide where if you have 2 qualifying accounts they pay a customer dividend and credit you £150 once a year, if it’s a joint account you both get it.

Princejoffyjaffur · 19/12/2025 15:01

I have £400K but I am 56. I had nothing until maybe 15 years ago.

MsWilmottsGhost · 19/12/2025 15:22

I had less than fuck all in my early/mid twenties, so I think your doing quite well.

I'm now mid fifties and disabled so I try to have a little emergency fund. Unfortunately there's usually an unexpected bill coming in to make a big dent in it. Last time it was blocked drains, now the car has a rattle 😭

twiddleit · 19/12/2025 15:29

We have around 3 years of income, however we are old and most is inherited from family who have died. So not exactly savings as such.

TheNameWasOnceChosen · 19/12/2025 15:57

45k but I'm in my 50's.
I didn't start saving until I was in my 30's.

user1471538275 · 19/12/2025 16:03

In my twenties and thirties I had no savings at all. I could barely make ends meet even being frugal.

It was only later in life when I could work more hours, had fewer childcare costs and committments that I could start to build up some savings.

Jc2001 · 19/12/2025 16:03

When I was young (30s) I had a bit of a reserve, maybe £5k but any spare money went into my mortgage. Now in early 50s and have about £60k in savings. It really accumulates once the mortgage is gone.

In my early 20s I bearly had anything.

vanillalattes · 19/12/2025 16:04

About 4k 🤷‍♀️ I’m 37.

FerrisWheelsandLilacs · 19/12/2025 16:05

I’m mid 30s and about £50k in cash/S&S ISAs. But all of which has accrued since turning 30. I did have two properties before turning 30 (our current house, and the money pit that is the flat we used to live in buy can’t sell and now rent out).

ConnieHeart · 19/12/2025 16:06

I have around £100k in savings, mainly from my dad's inheritance

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 19/12/2025 16:17

Hopefully you've both got pensions

Didimum · 19/12/2025 16:26

That’s completely respectable for your age. Well done. I have £80k and I’m 40.

Joeninety · 19/12/2025 16:29

In this new Liebour era, most are better off on benefits than working and saving.

Mumof2wifeof1crazytimes · 19/12/2025 17:01

When I was your age nothing, living pay check to pay check with credit card debts and a mortgage. I am 50 now and have good savings, I won’t say how much as it is very healthy but i have 25 years plus on you. Save what you can, it is a good habit and remember to enjoy life as well.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 19/12/2025 17:18

Two weeks ago- £48k
now -£3k and my daughter has a flat 😂
I didn’t have any savings at all until my early forties, I lived in my overdraft.

MrsKeats · 19/12/2025 17:20

What rubbish.
Under Labour we have joint salaries of 165k and lots of savings, pensions and equity.

Certainly those on low to average wages are .
