Is this dress considered ‘black tie’ enough - PART 2!

Hello!

Thank you to everyone who’s helped me with my black tie event dress scenario on my previous thread, It’s much appreciated.

I’ve taken all comments on board and tried something with a little less material as suggested. See the black dress below. ( sorry for the close crop of the photo!

What are your thoughts? Is this more suitable than the red (original dress in question)

I’m running out of time to find something as the event is next weekend so hoping this one is perhaps the better choice!

Thank you in advance! X

I reckon if the black dress is all zipped up (+/- shapewear) and you feel good in it (confident), it is the way to go.

If red dress, size down and wear it off shoulder.

You have a lovely figure.

Sorry for mentioning shapewear, I am not trying to be negative. Just for me personally, when i wear it, it's presence makes me stop slouching and to straighten my shoulders.

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 19/11/2025 09:06

They are both nice -

The black is v flattering and more conventional

The red is much more of a statement, but yeah, to the non fashion forward eye it has a mummy vibe - it would need to be worn with a strut (plus an updo and some statement earrings)

Would you consider something like this https://www.johnlewis.com/adrianna-papell-rosette-scuba-crepe-dress-super-red/p114325015 ? Still some ruching across the stomach, and the scuba fabric is less prone to showing every lump and bump. And would show off your new figure beautifully.

Another vote for black!!!! 😍😍😍

i hear you /relate re : self conscious stuff... 😮‍💨 it can be hard...

I also agree with @ThankULord on shapewear. I don't get to too tight so it's like wresting a bear every time i need to pee but i do find it helps things hang better and gives a smoother line!

Are you in the uk?
If you arent 100% sold on the black (i think it's a good choice btw)
i do think something like this
Green velvet dress would look good too and maybe youd be less self conscious / more comfortable as more free flowing.

You look gorgeous in both. The red might not be for everyone but it looks beautiful on you. Wear the one you feel most comfortable in and your confidence will shine through - and that’s what ultimately makes one dress the right one for you. Both are black tie appropriate.

DancingLions · 19/11/2025 09:36

Looking purely at the colours, red suits you much more than black. But looking at the style of dress, the black suits you more than the red. Shame you can't get the black dress in red!

Sunshineismyfavourite · 19/11/2025 09:48

Black dress is 100% better than the red. You look fabulous in it - wear it with confidence OP!

Sassylovesbooks · 19/11/2025 09:53

I think the black looks much better. The red has too much fabric and swamped you.

TryingToFindMyStyle · 19/11/2025 10:35

Black dress with Spanx and get a red shawl. If you’re in Dubai you’ve loads of lovely shawl options.

Congrats on the weight loss you look fabulous

Thank you! No I completely get what you mean, I love shapewear for the same reason! I am a naturally very slouchy / unconfident person so it definitely helps!

Ohh, that’s so pretty! I wish we had a John Lewis store here but unfortunately we don’t 😣😪

I think the problem (and I have this too) is that the outfits are wearing you rather than you wearing them.

High heels will also help with posture as well as will accessories and I think you can accessorise the black much more

The black looks fabulous! You suit red too but there is too much material… enjoy your night!

3peassuit · 19/11/2025 13:45

The black dress looks great on you. I'm not keen on the red, it swamps you.

redtieorno · 19/11/2025 19:50

I’m starting to look for jewellery now to finish the look. I’ve got a bag sorted but no shoes yet 🤣

would you say silver or gold jewellery would be best??

It looks as if you can get it at NextAE.

Girlintheframe · 20/11/2025 08:35

I just commented on your other thread. The black dress is lovely but I still think the red is absolutely stunning on you. Definitely go with which ever one makes you feel most confident and comfortable. You look amazing in both

IAmKerplunk · 20/11/2025 08:36

I like the red colour on you but as far as style of dress goes the black wins by a mile - you look amazing in it!

cannyvalley · 20/11/2025 11:06

The black dress is lovely and very appropriate. You are going to look stunning at your posh do xx

Whichever suits your skin tone black can take either so it is what suits you

Turnitoffnonagain · 20/11/2025 11:18

Something sparkly, and some chandelier type blingy earrings. I suspect from your skintone you may suit yellow gold rather than silver.

halfandhalfchipsandrice · 20/11/2025 11:49

I still prefer the red dress on you. I don't think the black one looks comfortable. I'd be worried about it falling off.

Ukefluke · 20/11/2025 12:00

Black is much better. The red is a bit like a blood soaked mummy!

InterestedDad37 · 20/11/2025 12:16

Black dress for the win 👍
