This is a huge problem that isn't being discussed enough. Our youngest and most qualified demographic is leaving this country in droves. on LinkedIn it seems at least one person in my network moves to another country every other week.

I suppose if you're young and mobile there is no need to remain here and watch 1/2 your net wage be taken by rent to live in a tiny HMO or flat.

Number of Britons leaving the UK higher than previously thought

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) figures come a day after the home secretary announced the biggest shake-up of the asylum system since the Second World War.

Young people have always travelled and experiened life abroad. I lived in 2 different countries in my 20s and 30s, then came back to the UK. I'm in my 50s now. My Mum lived in France in the 1960s for a couple of years.

nomas · 19/11/2025 06:02

That article doesn’t mention anything about young people?

Good for them I say, this country only caters to boomers.

Thepeopleversuswork · 19/11/2025 06:07

I have told my daughter that she should be trying to find work outside the UK.

Theres a lot to love about this country but at the moment its no place for young people.

Not only because of the dire economic situation either. The political mood in the UK now is horrible: suspicious, febrile and distrustful. Things may have changed in ten years but for now I think a bright and ambitious person would be better placed looking towards Asia. I hope it changes.

MaggieBsBoat · 19/11/2025 06:11

This is patently not true. The only people leaving UK long term are those who are able to secure visas. Young people find it very hard to get work visas because they have little or no work experience. They get visas for unqualified work on farms in Australia etc. This is not long term and it’s nothing different to what young people have done for generations. We are an island of travellers.
Even for the EU, in the absence of an EU passport they have to have a job offer over 43k and be qualified in STEM or other low resourced workto get a visa (48 otherwise and that’s a reduction on the earlier rules!).

Pedallleur · 19/11/2025 07:25

If they have the skills/qualifications required then yes it's ok but other countries haven't got an open door policy .

EleanorReally · 19/11/2025 07:28

i doubt asia would want permanent uk citizens

randomchap · 19/11/2025 07:38

There's absolutely nothing in that article saying its young people leaving

Are you posting with a particular political position in mind? Just shoe horning in your viewpoint on any even vaguely relevant article

It depends how well qualified they are. They certainly won’t support mass migration.

mamagogo1 · 19/11/2025 07:40

Rubbish, we have young adults and there’s plenty of opportunities for those willing to work.

mamagogo1 · 19/11/2025 07:42

And anyway, plenty of people want to risk their lives to live here. I know plenty of people who moved abroad then back because the grass wasn’t greener. I lived overseas for 6 years myself

dottiehens · 19/11/2025 10:05

Well the numbers speak for themselves. However, not sure if it is young people leaving. I know many left due to private schools VAT being the nail in the coffin. So more like families upset with being burdened with unfair taxes.

So people decided to up sticks and disrupt their children's education and lives by going abroad? Because of vat? Yeah right. Keep pushing the lie though

GreenGrass555 · 19/11/2025 11:16

It's not easy to just emigrate abroad unless you have specific skills. And yeah, people can make a lot of money in places like Dubai, but do people really want to spend their whole working lives in a country they have no connection to beyond working there and making money, and presumably far from friends and family too? Britain's economy and living standards have plummeted over twenty years, I wouldn't deny that, but there's more to living in a country than how much money you make.

I think people who haven't lived abroad before underestimate how culturally British most of us feel, and what a culture shock it can be to live in a completely different society. Some people love it and thrive in it! But it's a huge adjustment.

EasternStandard · 19/11/2025 11:21

Numbers leaving are high and it’s not surprising it’s easier for younger people to do that.

surreygirly · 19/11/2025 11:25

Good luck with that they will find that AI is taking jobs all over the planet

Jugendstiel · 19/11/2025 11:27

DS moved to USA. He is worried about Trump but over there his skills are valued and well paid. here he'd be on a shitty zero hours contract for the same exceptional skills. Makes no sense to be here. I know his brother is considering a move if the right job came up. Tbh if they both go, I might too.

MidnightMeltdown · 19/11/2025 11:36

YABU

We don’t have a shortage of qualified people. Quite the opposite. We have far too many, which is why many of them can’t get jobs. The push for everyone to go to university has led to an over qualification crisis.

RedTagAlan · 19/11/2025 11:53

Did you read the article ?

It says "The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has changed its methods for calculating immigration by using people's interaction with public authorities as opposed to surveys."

So they changed the method, and the numbers jumped.

That's because when you leave the country, there is no form to fill in.

So it can only be estimates. And they have changed from airport surveys to checking if NI numbers are being used.

When I left the UK, I just stopped direct debits etc, and went.

No paperwork to leave the UK, the paperwork is on the other side, work visa and all that. That is the difficult bit.

What really interests me with these stories though, is where are all these people going? What magic country is it that UK folk can just go to, no stringent visa requirements, and milk and honey flowing down every mountainside ?
