Hi MNetters - my hairdresser has just put her prices up and i just can’t stretch to the extra cost 😫

I could try and find somewhere cheaper but I’m wondering how hard it would be to colour my hair at home instead - I’m naturally quite dark but have blonde highlights.

Just wondering if anyone can shed some light on doing it at home please ? Any tips would be appreciated

I think you might find it difficult to do the foils yourself, it's not something I would try at home personally. If you have someone to help you you might manage I guess.
I've lightened my dark hair all over before at home with help from dh and it worked ok but that was just so I could put a copper coliured dye on.
I watched lots of youtube videos beforehand and the main advice I took from them was to use 20vol developer rather than 30 or 40 vol.
Good luck if you decide to go ahead!

If you need to cover grew with one-tone color - then it’s easy at home. I have been doing it for years and must have saved a lot.
But you can’t do highlights on your own - not easily anyway.

I’d find a cheaper solution - do make sure you know the exact name/tones of the color she uses.

Bleaching is very difficult to do well yourself, and foils even more so. Even if you're a hairdresser with the skills it's very tricky to do it on your own head. Have you checked if there are any colleges that offer discounted rates with student hairdressers? That was my go to when I was skint!

All over colour is do-able, but highlights less so unless you have monkey arms or a willing volunteer. Have a look for local training colleges - they usually have discounted rates - and so do some hair salons when training up their own staff.

Ohh I hadn’t thought about going to colleges - definitely something to think about!

Sounds like highlights are a little ambitious but I could see what an all over colour looked like - does anyone have any recs for what brand to go for ?

thank you for all your advice so far !

If cost is an issue have you thought about going to a hairdressing college or training centre? An all over colour is easy at home, highlights less so unless you have help

BlueBlueBerries · 18/11/2025 22:35

If you do an all over box colour, be careful as some hairdressers might charge for a full colour correction if you go back for highlights.

StickSeason · 18/11/2025 22:38

It might be an option to do your own roots and just have highlights less often? Depends on if you have a darker root smudge at the hairdressers. If you do stick with a demi permanent like Wella Color Touch with the matching developer. It grows out without the harsh line that comes from permanent colour.
